By JM Siasat: 2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre “SOG” Ward (25-0, 13KO’s) justified his place as one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world as he dominated Carl “The Cobra” Froch in Showtime’s Super Six Tournament in front of 5,626 fans in Boardwalk Hall Atlantic City NJ.
Ward first fought in the said tournament as an underdog against Mikkel Kessler, but to the surprise of many he turned out to be better than most people thought of, a statement underlined by the fact that he dominated each and every opponent on his way to being the tournament champion.
Ward who now holds the Ring, World Boxing Council (WBC) and WBA world super middleweight title displayed excellent boxing skills as he jabbed, slipped and moved making Froch look confused on how to fight the talented boxer hailing from Oakland California.
“I had a bad night first of” said Froch (28-2, 20KO’s) who suffered his second professional defeat. “I really can’t get anything going but obviously that’s due to Andre Ward’s slick defence skills. I wasn’t able to let my shots go he’s very slippery and very tricky” told Froch testifying to Ward’s superior boxing skills.
The super six winner remained humble as always in his post fight interview. “My Olympic run was supernatural and me coming in here without any experience and winning this thing against great fighters was supernatural” said Ward who also out landed Froch in the fight. “It was just a tough hard night, Carl is a great fighter all these fighters are great fighters that’s why you never hear me disrespect them before the fight I know what I’m getting into I just want to be a little better than them on the night of the fight” added Ward.
When asked about a possible matchup against the undefeated IBF super middleweight titleholder Lucian Bute (30-0, 24KO’s) Ward answered “I deserve a long rest were going to sit down with my team and we talk as a team were going to figure out what the next move is we’re not bound to do anything we’ll talk with my promoter, my manager and we’ll see what’s next”
Bute, whose toughest opponent to date is Glen Johnson will most likely be the underdog in a possible matchup.
Not only did Ward become the top super middleweight of the world after winning the super six tournament but his place in the prestigious Ring pound for pound rankings has also been elevated from the number 9 spot to number 5. Even with all that, Ward thinks he can still get better and even revealed to have hurt his left hand at round six of the fight.
While the champ had marvelous wins, it would only make sense to say that it’s been a tough road for the champion. For now, let’s give the champ a well deserved rest until he reaches a decision. The world is yours Andre.
