IRISH AMATEUR BOXING ASSOCIATION
Hugh Myres, Gavin McComb, Joel Scullion and Shane Roche won the first four bouts of the evening as 23 National U/21 Championships semi-finals were decided at the National Stadium in Dublin tonight.
Myres had two points to spare over Myles Casey, a brother of ex European super-bantamweight champ Willie “Big Bang.”
“It was a tough bout between Hugh and Myles especially in the third round,” said Irish 2004 Olympian and three-time Elite champion Andy Lee, who was back at the scene of many of his triumphs tonight.
Meanwhile, Sean McComb advanced courtesy of a win over Jamie Long of the Sunnyside BC in Cork and there was further disappointment for Leeside when Peter Keenan dropped a 16-12 decision to James Tennyson as Ulster continued to dominate.
JD Meli, Mark O’Hara, with the Holy Trinity BC’s third win on-the-trot, Eamon Magee, Marc McLaughlin, Martin Wall and Ronan Date also had their hands raised in victory tonight, McLoughlin shading Stephen Carroll in an exciting light-welterweight duel and Wall recording one of the biggest wins of the evening at the expense of Oisin Fahy
The Emmet Brennan versus Christy Joyce light-middleweight clash was another tight affair, Brennan emerging with a two point margin of victory, while Liam Green took the early route to victory versus Darragh Mullan.
Conrad Cummings, meantime, made it four in-a-row for the Holy Trinity BC. Cumming’s will now meet Chris Blaney in next Friday’s 75Kg final following the Navan BC middleweight’s 12-8 decision over Bernard Roe.
Brendan Butler and Patrick McDonagh were separated on a count back, McDonagh getting the nod on accepted scores, while Davey Joyce Joyce progressed from a see-saw clash with JP Delaney on a night of mixed fortunes for the Immaculata.
Ciaran O’Griofa also impressed at the home of Irish boxing, and Gary Sweeney edged out Christy Joyce by a single point in the cruiserweight class.
The heavyweight showdown between Jack Morrissey and Thomas Farrell was another one point affair, Farrell shading a 16-15 verdict to set up next weekend’s 91Kg decider with Tommy McCarthy, who saw of the challenge of Sean McGlinchey.
Sean Turner ended the night on a high note for the Drimnagh BC with a first round KO of Gurteen BC super-heavyweight Joseph Ward.
The 2011 National U/21 finals will be decided next Friday evening.

Katie Taylor claimed her fifth European lightweight title on-the-trot with a composed victory over Sofya Ochigava at the 8th European Women’s Championships in Rotterdam this evening.
The Irish three-time World champion was rarely troubled before being handed a 10-5 decision over the Russian two-time World champion after four,two minutes rounds of tonight’s 60Kg final.
Tonight’s verdict was a case of high fives all round for Taylor – who had the entire Irish squad singing her down to victory this evening – as the win was her fifth in six days at the Championships.
The 10-5 decision was also sweet revenge for Taylor as she was somehow adjudged to have been “beaten” 8-1 by Ochigava at the Usti na Labem Grand Prix in the Czech Republic in March 2010.
“Sofya is one of the best opponents I have ever met and I’m absolutely thrilled with the win. I can’t believe it really. I would like to thank my dad and coaches and the entire Irish squad for all their fantastic support all week, ” said Taylor.
Tonight’s win is also the third gold medal that Ireland has won at European Senior Championships level this year as Joe Ward and Ray Moylette won double gold at the European Men’s Championships
in Turkey in June.
“Katie is boxing at another level than what she was at last year and she was absolutely exceptional. The entire squad are on a high after this win and we’re absolutely thrilled, ” said Irish team manager Anna Moore.
Taylor, who led 1-0 after the first against her Russian opponent courtesy of a flashing right early in the frame, resisted the temptation to engage with Ochigava, who was “extending invitations” to mix it, and stretched her lead to 4-1 by the end of the second.
The third frame was another cagey affair. However, Taylor, once again showing remarkable composure, patiently build on her advantage en route to a unprecedented haul of European gold medals for an Irish athlete.
The Bray woman, who was boxing out of the blue corner tonight, has now won three World, five European and four European Union titles – all in-a-row.
