By Vitali Shaposhinko: It looks like it will be at least six months before Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero (29-1-1) is able to return to the ring.
Guerrero’s manager Bob Santos had the following to say in regards to Guerrero’s injury and the steps being taken to deal with this issue at this time: “After talking to Dr. Dillingham today, Robert will undergo an arthroscopic shoulder surgery procedure to take a closer look at the damage done to his rotator cuff. Right now the MRI shows a slight tear, but Dillingham advised us that it would be in our best interest to scope the shoulder to check for other damage that an MRI can’t reveal. No definitive answer can be made as to when Robert Guerrero will return to the ring until after his surgery is completed next Tuesday. We are hoping he’ll be back in six months, God willing his surgery goes smoothly.”
Guerrero also stayed positive in his own mind, saying:” “I’m really disappointed that I had to pull out of the fight, but thankful that the steps are in motion to get healthy. I know surgery is a dangerous procedure, but Dr. Dillingham is one of the best doctors in the country that specializes with this type of surgery. It looks like Marcos Maidana (30-2-0), who was supposed to face Guerrero next, will have to find another opponent and wait for Guerrero to get well before talking about their potential bout again. This was and is very disappointing not only to both of the fighters, but also very sad news for millions of fans. This fight was anticipated with great excitement, as both fighters always come to fight and put on a great performance for their fans.
So what will the future hold for Guerrero and how will his career unfold? Of course its nearly impossible to say how, but it’s not likely to change its course due to this injury alone. A lot of athletes experience mid career injuries, and come back stronger then before. I think it’s all in the hands of the promoters at this point in time, and if they can put forth extra effort, this fight will happen sometime next year.
