Kimbo Slice Scores Brutal 1st-Round KO In Boxing Debut

By James Slater: MMA big name Kimbo Slice enjoyed a successful heavyweight boxing debut last night in Oklahoma, as he brutally despatched novice James Wade in the very 1st-round of a scheduled four. With precious seconds of the fight gone, the huge, physically impressive Slice landed a monster right uppercut on Wade’s chin. Down and flat on his back for a worrying amount of time, there was no way Wade was going to beat the count..

The official time was just 17-seconds of the opening round and Slice (real name Kevin Ferguson) is now 1-0(1) as a pro heavy. 39-year-old Wade, really just a cruiserweight, is now 0-2.

At age 37, Slice doesn’t have too much time in which to learn and adapt to the rules and techniques of The Sweet Science, but he clearly has raw power in his fists – his right hand especially. The purists won’t be too thrilled at the sight of the former MMA star attempting to box, but for as long as he does so, Slice can only add some excitement. Sure, most fans will tune in to see him box purely out of a curiosity basis more than anything, but if – and it’s probably a big if – Slice can continue winning and even get to the stage where he faces a ranked contender and wins, he will have proved a point.

Slice who, a while back said, “I love fighting. I like to knock people the f**k out. I love engaging,” has said he intends to take a number of fights at a lower level as he learns his new craft. Worryingly, however, Roy Jones Junior has already expressed an interest in facing Slice. Some prompter somewhere will be willing to stage such an event, on that you can bet money. But would such a curiosity fight (or freak-show as some would no doubt say) be in any way a high quality or tasteful affair?

Slice says he will be ready to box again soon. He certainly never had a chance to even break a sweat against the unfortunate Wade.
