Quigg fights on 7/23; Vasquez-Dailey on 6/3; Tarver-Green quotes

SCOTT QUIGG is preparing for his final contest in hometown Bury until he becomes a world champion.

The fastest rising star in British boxing will defend his WBA intercontinental super-bantamweight title in his hometown at Castle Leisure Centre on Saturday July 23.

A boxing ban in Bury was lifted last year so that Quigg could fight in his backyard, but success has meant outgrowing local venues.

His promoter Ricky Hatton believes that one day Quigg will be fighting Bury’s Gigg Lane football ground and defending a world title.

Quigg, 22, has won all 21 professional contests and the British Boxing Board of Control has made him the official challenger for Jason Booth’s British 8st 10lb title.

Hatton said: “This is the last time Scott will box a small hall show for some time, so it will be a great occasions with a spine-tingling atmosphere.

“We could have had this fight on one of our televised cards, but Bury Council have been fantastic and the fans amazing so we owed it them to bring another of Scott’s fights to the town.

“Hatton Promotions have a reputation for high quality shows and I want fans to go home remembering this one for a long time.”

Quigg will be making his second defence of the title he won against Santiago Allione last September and his overseas opponent will be named in the next couple of weeks.

The BBB of C have ordered his fight against Booth to take place by the end of September and purse bids will be opened on June 8 and Hatton Promotions are confident of winning the bid.

Hatton added: “The Booth fight is a great opportunity for Scott to wear a Lonsdale belt, but he will not have an easy test in July.

“Scott is already world class and I don’t need easy fights for the sake of it.”

Despite no official announcement of Quigg’s Bury brawl tickets are close to selling out more than TWO months before the big day.

Cleverly not worried about Froch’s comments, focused on Braehmer bout on Saturday

Nathan Cleverly has welcomed Carl Froch’s admission that he’s well and truly on his radar, but is focusing first on his world title fight this Saturday night.

Cleverly has vowed to impress in his World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Light-Heavyweight title challenge against the Champion Juergen Braehmer at The O2 in London, live in the UK on Sky Box Office and in America on EPIX.

The unbeaten Welshman says it could lead to a domestic dust up against the World Boxing Council (WBC) World Super-Middleweight Champion who has talked about moving up to light-heavyweight.

This week Froch said that a fight against Cleverly could become inevitable if both fighters remain undefeated.

“I’ve got nothing but respect for Froch and that would be a cracking fight down the line,” said Cleverly.

“If Froch does intend to come up to light-heavyweight, then who better to fight than me with a world title on the line?

“I’ve got to get a big win on the world stage first, and it won’t come much bigger than Braehmer.

“He’s the only thing that I’m focused on at the moment, and I’m not taking my eye off the ball this Saturday because a win is crucial.

“First I’ve got to deal with Braehmer in style on Saturday night, then not only will Froch take me seriously, but so will the Americans.

“This is my chance to put myself in the spotlight and I intend to take it.”

ANTONIO TARVER

“This is a big fight for both of us. I know he’s tough and not going to let me just walk in his backyard and take the title without making a strong showing for himself. I have to take it from him and I don’t expect the fight to go the distance.”

“I’m not planning on going 12 rounds with this fight. I want to get him out early, because 12 rounds with Danny Green is a lot of work and he has knockout power.”

“I have no plans being on Danny Green’s resume as a lost. I’m sure he’s going to try and test the waters with his aggressive style like he did against Roy Jones Jr., but I’m no Roy Jones Jr..”

DANNY GREEN

“Antonio Tarver is going to be a hard fighter for me to hit. He has size, skills, experience and he’s a southpaw.. It’s going to be tough fight for me.”

“I’m not planning on giving up my World Title. I have a lot of homework to do. This will no doubt be the hardest fight of my career. If I’m not prepared, I will lose this fight.”

“What I like about this fight is it will allow me another opportunity to make my name and it will open other doors for me. I will be ready on July 20th.”
