TORONTO, ON – (Wednesday, January 19, 2011) Hennessy Sports makes its hard-hitting return to Mississauga on Saturday, February 19th, with the latest installment of United Promotions’ wildly successful series of events at the Hershey Centre, in what is shaping up to be one of the most important fight cards ever staged in Ontario.
Featuring local and international stars like NABA Lightweight champion Logan Cotton McGuinness, former WBC Junior Welterweight world champion Junior Witter, and undefeated prospect Sammy “El Producto” Vargas squaring off in crucial fights, February 19th will shape the boxing landscape in Canada for years to come.
As great as the card at the Hershey Centre is on the 19th, it’s only the nightcap of a crucial double header for Hennessy Sports. Earlier that evening at London’s famed Wembley Arena, much of the company’s outstanding UK stable will be in action, including rising welterweight star John O’Donnell, Light Welterweight warrior Lenny Dawes, and undefeated heavyweight sensation Tyson Fury.
Topping the sensational event in Mississauga will be burgeoning superstar Logan Cotton McGuinness (13-0, 6 KO’s) defending his NABA Lightweight title against a soon to be named opponent.
“Logan has proved he’s one of the best young fighters in the world. He’s got skill, heart, and variety to his game. You watch Logan fight, and you’re instantly drawn to him,” said Adam Harris, McGuinness’ promoter, and president of Hennessy Sports Canada.
“And that NABA title means there are no soft touches for him. When he defends that crown on February 19th, it’ll be against a guy hell bent on taking his head off, and his belt home.”
In the co-main event, hometown heroes Tebor “The Beast” Brosch (6-3-4, 2 KO’s) and Samuel “El Producto” Vargas (7-0, 1 KO) square-off for Brosch’s Canadian Welterweight title, in a grudge match with not just local, but national implications.
“These are two game, hungry fighters squaring off in the most important fight of their respective careers. This is what makes boxing great,” Harris said of the all-Mississauga battle that many people think is too close to call.
“Tebor’s unbeaten in his last seven, and is on a real roll. But the difference between the two fighters is Vargas has never tasted defeat. He is rapidly improving due to his busy schedule and tutelage under Chris Johnson. On February 19th Brosch and that Canadian belt are going to bring out the best in Sam Vargas,” Harris said.
And in an eye-popping 10 round special attraction, former WBC Junior Welterweight champion Junior “The Hitter” Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO’s), from Sheffield, England, makes his welterweight debut against Romanian-born Torontonian Victor Lupo (18-1-2, 9 KO’s).
Witter, who captured the WBC world title in September of 2006 by topping DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley, hasn’t fought since suffering an injury 17 months ago in a WBC 140 lb. title clash with now division kingpin Devon Alexander, and is itching to prove he still has what it takes to sit atop the boxing world.
“Junior has fought the best in the world at 140 lbs. When Witter steps into the Hershey Centre ring, fans will be treated to not only a former WBC champion, but truly one of the best fighters in the world making his welterweight debut.”
