By Matt Clark: The countdown has officially begun to what is potentially one of the best Heavyweight matchups Australia has seen in many years. Bone-crushing knockout artist Alex “The Lionheart” Leapai will face his toughest challenge when he clashes with former world title challenger Owen “What the Heck” Beck.
The two Heavyweights collide on Thursday August 12th at the Southport RSL, Gold Coast, Australia. Promoted by Jamie Myer and billed “Heavyweight Explosion” the battle headlines a card which will be shown live around Australia on Fox Sports..
“This has the potential to be an explosive fight that could end in a violent knockout,” Myer said. “Both guys like to get the job done inside the distance and there’s every chance the judges won’t be needed for this fight”.
Eastsideboxing.com managed to speak to Beck, who took time out from his training schedule to share his thoughts on the upcoming fight.
Q . Owen, firstly thanks for taking the time to speak with us.
A. No problem.
Q. Firstly, what do you know about your next opponent, Alex Leapai?
A. I know he is an up-and-coming Heavyweight in Australia, trying to make a name for himself in the Heavyweight division.
Q. Tell us a little bit about your background. When did you move to the United States and how did you get into boxing?
A. I moved to the United States in 2002, from Jamaica. I started boxing at 14 years of age and I haven’t looked back! I got into boxing through a good friend of mine.
Q. How would you describe your fighting style?
A. Well, I’m more of a slick boxer/puncher.
Q. How has your preparation been coming along?
A. My preparation has been great! I have been sparring with a lot of Philadelphia gym fighters. They are very rugged and they can all fight!
Q. You obviously see this as a big opportunity…
A. Absolutely. I am coming to give my best performance. I know Alex will be tough, so I am prepared for what he brings.
Q. I take it this will be your first time to Australia? Are you looking forward to meeting the people and putting on a show?
A. I am looking forward to coming to Australia! Of course I want to see the country, but it’s all about business! I want to bring the title back to the United States (Leapai’s WBO interim Asia Pacific title will be on the line if sanctioned). To answer your question though, this is my first time to Australia.
Q. Owen, thanks for taking the time to speak with us. Best of luck on August 12th.
A. No problem, thanks for the interview. I look forward to putting on a great fight for the fans and I hope they come out and support boxing.
