by James Slater – In a surprising development that few will have seen coming, Australia’s Anthony Mundine, the former two-time WBA super-middleweight champion, has called for a fight with pound-for-pound star Floyd Mayweather Junior! – so Fox Sports website in Australia has revealed.
The 35-year-old who next fights Jorge Daniel Miranda down at 154-pounds in June, announced to the media in Brisbane, Australia that he very much wants to become known as the best Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world, and that the way to do it is to defeat the 33-year-old megastar..
Having fought as high as 170-pounds in his now ten-year pro career, Mundine, 38-3(23) and known as “The Man,” has slowly dropped down to light-middleweight – and it is apparently at 154-pounds that the former 168-pound ruler wants to fight “Money.”
“My main goal and my reborn focus is to fight one man and that man is Floyd Mayweather,” Mundine said on Thursday of this week. “I want to be the best pound-for-pound in the world. I’m really starting to realise my potential, starting to realise what I can achieve, I want to be the best.
“There’s only one man who can beat Floyd and that’s me. I know that because I fight like him.”
If you’re anything like me, you won’t be too sure what to make of Mundine’s comments. Is he serious? Does he really think he can beat Mayweather? And, most importantly when it comes to the questions his comments have inspired – does he really believe, even in his wildest dreams, that a fight between he and “Money” will ever get made?
It’s easy to applaud Mundine’s desire to be the best and, truth be told, a fight between he and Mayweather would likely prove interesting. But let’s face it, it will never happen. What would there be for Floyd to gain in such a fight? With names like Manny Pacquiao and Sergio Martinez calling out Mayweather, why would the former “Pretty Boy” look at Mundine instead? And why, if there was no big title to win there, would Floyd go back up to 154-pounds for a second time? Mundine fights Miranda for the WBA International light-middleweight title in June; not a belt Floyd would even look twice at!
My comments are not aimed at Mundine in a disrespectful way, I simply cannot believe he has called for such an unrealistic fight when there are other, far more likely-to-be-made challenges out there for him. And, again not to be disrespectful, has Mayweather even heard of Mundine?
At the end of the day, you can’t blame a guy for trying, but how shocked would YOU be if Mayweather-Mundine actually happened?!
