Friday Fight Night in Belfast – Headlined by Cuban Sensation Alexei Acosta

boxingBy Brendan Galbraith – Friday Fight Night – An action-packed evening of international boxing – headlined by exciting Cork-based Cuban Bantamweight Alexei ‘The Hurricane’ Acosta will take place this coming Friday – 20th November 2009 at the Holiday Inn, Belfast, Northern Ireland. This event is presented by Belfast Promotions in Association with Team Alio and 1st Team Promotions. Also, featuring on the bill is Northern Ireland’s popular flyweight prospect – Luke ‘Winky’ Wilton – who is coming off an impressive win over Kevin Coglan in the recent undercard of Rogan-Sexton II and looking to take another step towards a shot at the British Title.

The headliner will see former World Junior Champion and World Cadet Champion, Alexei Acosta, contest an 8 rounder with southpaw, Sean Hughes. The highly-rated Acosta has over 200 amateur fights under his belt and the 21 year old Cork-based Cuban has impressively concluded all of his 8 pro fights inside the distance and all within 3 rounds. Former English Super Bantamweight Champion, Sean Hughes has pedigree – he lost a competitive challenge to Jason Booth for the Commonwealth Title last year and shares a win and loss with Esham Pickering – the latter being a failed attempt for the British Title..

Acosta’s original opponent was the unbeaten Nicaraguan Rene Alvarado (7-0) in a proposed WBA Intercontinental title bout, but according to Acosta’s Manager, Gary Hyde, the Nicaraguan had to pull out due an injury that he picked up in training. Whilst the Acosta-Hughes match is a non-title fight, it is without doubt an intriguing test for Acosta.

Can, orthodox, Acosta sustain his explosive KO record over the tough and experienced southpaw, Sean Hughes or will he be forced to revert to his boxing skills to target a points win? We will find out on Friday night.

The proposed fights are:

Bantamweight Alexei Acosta 8-0 vs Sean Hughes 15-9-1 8 x 3 rounds
Flyweight Luke Wilton 5-2-1 vs Muharem Osmanov (1-2) 4 x 3 rounds
Super middleweight JJ McDonagh (debut) vs Stefan Stanko 6 -60-1 4 x 3 rounds
