News: Euro Boxing; Yader Escobar; Luis Perez; Brian Mihtar

By Per Ake Persson: With WBC cruiser champ Giacobbe Fragomeni “sidelined” with a defence against Zsolt Erdei on November 21 in Kiel this might just leave Herbie Hide and Krzysztof Wlodarzcyk to battle it out for an interim title. A decision on the matter might come on the upcoming WBC convention.

Russian heavy Alexander Povetkin will indeed fight for the IBF Interim title – opponent is Eddie Chambers, who however is in a position as mandatory challenger with the WBO and was selected by K 2 to fight IBF and WBO king Wladimir Klitschko. If Chambers – a clear loser to Povetkin in a IBF eliminator – will decline then Samuel Peter is next in line..

The fight for the vacant EBU supermiddle title between Mads Larsen and Dimitri Sartison could be heading for a postponement, writes JP in Denmark, and not go ahead until January of next year. Palm Promotions, headed by Hans Henrik Palm, that won the purse bids states that Larsen is in good shape but not in the kind of condition one needs for this kind of fight. However, if a postponement is allowed by the EBU Board remains to be seen.

Former EBU welter champ Hans Henrik Palm also reveals to JP that he intends to enter the boxing business for real now. Palm previously promoted Mikkel Kessler vs Librado Andrade in Copenhagen but then went back to work in the real estate business. Palm Promotions also hold the right to stage Lolenga Mock vs Mehdi Bouadla for the vacant EU title but no site or date have been given for that one either.

WBF heavyweight champ Francois Botha will now fight German-based Cuban Pedro “lLa Estrella” Carrion October 24 in Dessau after veteran Willi Fischer has pulled out due to a shoulder injury. Carrion was a big star in the amateurs but never had same impact in the pros. The 39-year old returned earlier this year after two years out and has fought twice beating very soft opponents. Still, he´s a big man with long reach and will give the aging champion some problems – but probably not enough to beat him. Botha is the consumate veteran; he knows exactly what he can do and what he can´t.

German heavy Steffen Kretschmann is sidelined with the flu and is off the fight against Cisse Salif October 24 in Cuxhaven. He´s replaced by stablemate Konstantin Airich, who´s in tough against the much bigger, hardpunching Salif.

October 27 marks the 60th anniversary since the great Marcel Cerdan crashed with an airplane on his way to the US and rematch against Jake LaMotta in an attempt to regain the World Middleweight title. It´s of course remembered by the Marcel Cerdan Heritage. Check out marcelcerdanheritage.com for more info.
