02.03.09 – By Eugene Carnachan – Promoters Duco Events after deliberating over which city to stage the highly anticipated fight between New Zealand heavyweights David Tua and Shane Cameron have chosen Hamilton City. Hamilton, a city smaller then New Zealand’s largest city – Auckland – is known for it’s willingness to lay on the big events for sportin fans and in this case has done exactly that. Ian Fraser a spokesman for Duco Events cited “respect” as the key determinant as to why Hamilton was chosen over other cities. The fight will take place on June 6th..
The fight billed as “The fight of the Century” between two noted sluggers will have 18,000 seats available for fight fans. This match up is expected to pack out and not since the 1960s and 1970s halcyon days of New Zealand boxing has a match up had such a buzz surrounding it.
David Tua 49 (KO 42) + lost 3 (KO 0) + drawn 1 and Shane Cameron 22 (KO 19) + lost 1 (KO 1) + drawn 0 are both training hard for the upcoming bout. Tua is the long time torch bearer of New Zealand heavyweight boxing and Cameron ranked 8th by the WBO is looking to unseat the old hand and move on to a title challenge within the next 12 months. But before he can fulfill those goals he has to get past Tua who knows he must win the fight if he is going to get back into the top tier of heavyweight scene.
Both fighters know the stakes are high!
Cameron has a tune up bout penciled in, in his hometown of Gisborne next week. Tua is expected to squeeze a tune up opponent in between now and fight night.
Between the two both have knock out ratios of 80%! Fans are assured an exciting contest between two men that come to fight off the front foot and both carrying bombs in each hand and with neither noted for their defensive skills there will be some big leather traded.
The under card features the exciting light middleweight Steve Heremaia and former world kicking boxing champ Shane “Chopper” Chapman who is now campaigning in boxings light heavyweight division. Chapman renowned for his toughness will be fighting New Zealand Olympian Soulan Powncenby. This should be an outstanding contest between two hard working pros looking to push into the world rankings. Chapman and Heremaia are favourites of local fight fans because of their willingness to exchange. Heremaia in particular has an outstanding skill base and fearless style and should he further refine those skills and stay in the gym he has the raw potential to make an impression in the upper echelons of the light middleweight division.
