by James Slater – This coming Saturday evening, when most boxing fans will be looking forward to the huge Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Junior fight that will take place on the other side of the Atlantic a few hours later, British heavyweight Danny Williams will be in action in London..
Williams, 40-6(31) was supposed to be having a return match with the man he closely and somewhat controversially out-pointed back in July, in John McDermott. However, due to “Big Bad John’s” injury-enforced withdrawal, Williams now faces Poland’s 29-year-old Albert Sosnowski, 43-2(26). 35-year-old Williams, the reigning British heavyweight champion, told The South London Press he plans to get Sosnowski out of there inside 5 rounds.
Danny has another fight scheduled a mere three weeks later, against the well known South African, Francois Botha, a fight to be held in the exotic location that is right smack bang in front of the Pyramids in Egypt. And Williams is very much looking forward to the intriguing match-up, and is hoping to get rid of the Pole quickly so he will be fresh for the bout against “The White Buffalo.” But will Danny get his wish?
Sosnowksi, who lives in Essex, U.K, is no world-beater, but he is a reasonable fighter who has fought in many different countries – including the U.K, America, Hungary and South Africa. As a result, the 29-year-old is a very experienced and seasoned operator who is unlikely to be intimidated when he meets Williams at The York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday night. Sosnowski is a fair puncher and he has beaten a few name fighters.
Turning pro back in July of 1998, Sosnowski won his first 19 bouts, most of them inside the distance, before he was upset in 9 rounds by Canada’s Arthur Cook in a fight held in Budapest. After that, “The Dragon” kept a clean sheet for his next 22 fights, getting wins over Travis Fulton in Las Vegas, a past-it Orlin Norris In Los Angeles and Terrell Nelson in New York. But then, in his last fight, Sosnowski was out-pointed by the oft-beaten Zuri Lawrence. That fight took place back in August of this year, and the loss marked Sosnowski’s second. He has only been stopped once, however, with his sole KO defeat coming against Cook way back in 2001.
Can Williams become the second man to KO Sosnowski? Williams is a notoriously hot and cold fighter. So much so that, though a loss on Saturday is unlikely for him, a struggle is not so much of a long shot. Sosnowski has been active, has a fair chin at least, and is younger than Williams.
I go for Danny to get a comprehensive points win on Saturday, and not the KO he is looking for. How much energy a distance fight will leave him with for the November 30th fight with Botha is something that will be very interesting.
