11.04.08 – By James Slater: According to the British Boxing News, heavyweight contender Danny Williams, from Brixton in the U.K, is set to box tomorrow evening on the under card of the Woods-Tarver/Dawson-Johnson bill in Florida. Boxing for the first time this year, the 34 year old Williams is reportedly set to face the old-timer that is none other than the quite ancient Alfred “Ice” Cole, the former cruiserweight king..
Williams, 37-6-0-1(30) who is a notoriously unreliable fighter at times, was last seen boxing to a No-Contest over four rounds with Oleg Platov in December. A win tomorrow, however, looks a sure thing – especially as he goes in with such a worn out veteran as Cole. “Ice,” who is in his mid-forties and hasn’t fought since back in March of 2005 when he was stopped in three rounds by Sultan Ibragimov, has not won a fight since August of 2003. Indeed, to most fans he is no doubt considered a long retired former world champion. But, according to Boxing News, the former IBF cruiserweight boss will climb in against the big Brit with the fluctuating weight.
As we know, Danny can enter a ring weighing in at anything from 228 pounds, as he did when he fought Scott Gammer, or a huge 270, as he did when boxing Platov last time out. When in top form, though, Williams can beat the likes of (an admittedly faded, yet still dangerous) Mike Tyson, Matt Skelton and Kali Meehan. Williams, also, has a win over Audley Harrison to his name (remember him?). Surely Danny will emerge with another victory on his record tomorrow when he faces the 34-14-3(16) Cole. Look for big Danny (just how big we will only find out when he weighs in, of course) to win as he pleases. Probably inside around three to five rounds.
Speaking of Audley Harrison. The former Olympic champion is also scheduled to fight again soon – on the under card of the Calzaghe-Hopkins bout to be exact. Harrison, who has not boxed since he was unceremoniously KO’d in three rounds by Michael Sprott in February of 2007, faces an opponent as yet to be named. Southpaw Harrison, now aged 36 and with a pro record of 21-3(16) has to make some serious effort and quickly if he wants to salvage anything at all from a once promising pro career. It is to be hoped he fights someone who is at least reasonable on April 19th.
