Mike Tyson Issues Statement To Public

By Matthew Hurley: Before starting his one day prison sentence after pleading guilty back in September to a misdemeanor DUI and a single felony count of cocaine possession former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson issued a statement to the public. “I just want to say how happy I am today that the judge has granted me freedom stemming from an arrest one year ago. I am thankful to everyone who has helped me through a very difficult time. To my family, friends and fans around the world who sent letters and provided support, I thank you.”

Tyson went on to add, “To my lawyers and to all the people who have helped me stay clean and sober for the past ten months, thank you. I will be taking one day at a time, staying sober is my job. There are many people who are fighting for their lives from drug and alcohol addiction. I will use my time and energy to help those in need. Now I look forward to spending time with my children.”

Tyson will begin serving his jail time Tuesday morning. The lenient sentence, which included three years probation, could have been much harsher. The prosecutor, Shane Krauser, upon Tyson’s arrest had publicly stated that he would try to secure the maximum penalty for the retired boxer. Krauser maintained that Tyson had already used up several “second” chances and had been abusing the system with his reckless behavior for years. Tyson could have received four years and three months in jail but after Tyson told the court that, “I take responsibility for my actions,” Superior Court Judge Helene Abrams showed mercy and sentenced Tyson to twenty-four hours in jail and the probation period.
