British Boxing: Dean Francis Re-Signs With Warren

Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight champion Dean Francis has re-signed with Frank Warren – and is targeting a showdown with IBF World Champion Clinton Woods. Francis, who has also held the British, European and WBO Intercontinental super-middleweight crowns under Warren’s guidance, will defend his Commonwealth belt at the Bolton Arena on December 8..

The 33-year-old power-puncher had also been considered as a possible opponent for Antonio Tarver in the States but the American turned him down.

Advised by Jonathan Feld at the World Sports Organisation, Francis, 33, boasts a 28-3 (23) record, and is getting back to his best and looking forward to the future after legal, contractual and injury problems kept him away from the ring.

“It’s great news that I’m back with Frank Warren, the promoter who helped me to some of my greatest wins,” said Francis.

“And it will be incredible to defend my title at the Bolton Arena in front of a sell out crowd next month.

“Being away from the sport I love made me realise how much it means to me, and how much more I want to acheive.

“I’ve never given up my dream of becoming a world champion, and winning a world title is a realistic goal.

“Obviously Clinton Woods is number one in the UK at the moment at 175 pounds, but given a couple more fights, I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be up there challenging him.”

Promoter Frank Warren added: “I’m delighted to sign Dean again, and I’m confident he is still has what it takes. A few years ago, he was one of the biggest punchers in the super-middleweight division, and from what I’ve seen he has carried that form over to the light-heavyweights.”

No opponent has yet been announced for Francis.

Amir Khan’s Commonwealth lightweight title defence against Graham Earl tops the card and will be televised live on ITV1.
