Tua Destroys Fox!

07.09.07 – By Scott Frake: One-time heavyweight title challenger David Tua (49-3-1, 42 KOs) annihilated his badly outgunned opponent Cerrone Fox (8-6, 8 KOs) in the 2nd round last night at the Soaring Eagle Casino, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. After fighting the first round in a mostly pedestrian pace, Tua suddenly opened up with powerful hooks in the 2nd round, and knocked Fox down three times before the referee came to his rescue and halted the mismatch at 1:41 of the 2nd round. For Tua, he wins his seventh consecutive victory over a hopelessly overmatched 2nd tier opponent since starting his boxing comeback in March 2005..

david tuaTua, 34, ranked #12 in the WBC, was in superb shape at 234 lbs, and had virtually everything in his favor during the one-sided bout. Not only did Fox, 28, have little power, speed, size, but he also appeared to have little in the way of skills, which made Tua’s task even easier.

In the first round, Tua started slowly, jabbing Fox and trying to set him up for a left hook. He fought slowly as he normally does in the first round, but near the end of the round, Tua opened up with several power shots that connected to the head of Fox. For his part, Fox was using little finesse, and was throwing wild right hands with everything he had into them.

In the second round, Tua looked much more serious as the round started, throwing hooks with incredible force behind. It wasn’t long before Tua connected with a big left hook to the head of Fox, sending him to the canvas. Fox got up and was clearly hurt but he referee let it continue. Moments later, Tua dropped him with another left hook to the head and a right to the midsection.

After getting up on weak legs, Fox tried in fain to survive the round as he pawed with his jab. Tua, however, quickly moved in and finished him off with yet another left hook, which sent Fox to the canvas for the third and final time in the round. The referee moved in and put a stop to the massacre at 1:41 of the 2nd round.
