Powell wins Aussie title by DQ

16.02.07 – By Tony Nobbs: Matt Powell won the vacant Australian featherweight title when his opponent Mohammed Elomar was disqualified in round seven of a scheduled ten at the Kedron Wavel Services Club in Brisbane, Queensland last night. This was a rematch of a December bout for the same belt that was ruled a No Contest after an out of control brawl in round three.

This time around was a similar battle with ringsiders describing it as an ugly brawling scrap, with Powell ahead on each of the three cards after six rounds (58-54, 58-54, 59-55). In the seventh, Powell fell to the canvas after a right hand to the groin and referee Alan Simpson immediately disqualified Elomar who had points taken off him in rounds four and six.

Queenslander Powell, 30, now goes to a record of 9-3-2, 3 KO’s. He was cornered by Brian Peden (Robbie’s dad) and current Australian light welterweight champ Chris Mc Cullen. Previously unbeaten Elomar, 22, from the highly successful Billy Hussein stable in Sydney, drops to 12-1, 4 KO’s

In under card action former state light welter champion and Aussie title challenger Jim Savage won a six round split points decision over Filipino trier Rolando Gerongco in a cracking bout at welterweight.

Glen Azar made his pro debut a success scoring a second round TKO of Johnny Parai of New Zealand, heavyweights. The visitor withdrew due to a calf injury but Azar, who had an amateur record of 16-3, was in control, picking his man off. Azar, who’s also the trainer of Mick Shaw, former Australian lightweight champion, fought this bout for charity.

Andrew Gosden scored a three round TKO over Jun Geraldino of The Philippines at welterweight, veteran Greg Tomlinson out pointed Col Mc llwayne jnr in a bruising four round heavyweight encounter and Ashliegh White looked promising in stopping Graham Foley in the last round of a four.

Promoter was Angelo Di Carlo’s Ace Promotions. There next show is March 9 at Logan, south of Brisbane, headlined by the return of former IBF super featherweight champion of the world Robbie “Bomber” Peden against dangerous Filipino Ranee Ganoy.
