29.09.06 – Lenny Daws will make the first defence of his British light welterweight title on a Hennessy Sports event at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday 20th October. Sky Sports will televise live. Whilst many new champions look to make a quick voluntary defence, the popular Londoner goes straight in against his mandatory contender Barry Morrison, from Scotland.
“Morrison has been selected as my most deserving opponent and I am more than happy to take him on,” said Daws, who won the title with an outstanding win over Nigel Wright earlier this year.
“He’s a good solid fighter. He turned pro at around the same time as me and also has some good championship experience so it’s going to be a tough, hard fight, but I am confident I have that bit more. There is a lot of improvement in me yet.”
Whilst contracts for the Championship have only just been signed, Daws’ promoter Mick Hennessy had been in discussions with Morrison’s representatives for some time.
“This fight has been in the pipeline for a while now,” explained Hennessy. “Morrison has fought since we opened discussions with Tommy Gilmour – (he beat Mounir Guebbas at the York Hall earlier this month) – so he will be in great shape. This is a real live British Title fight between two highly regarded, promising fighters at the top of their game.”
Daws, 27, will have the advantage of fighting in front of the loyal and ever growing ‘Morden Massive,’ who mobilise for his every fight.
“Lenny is becoming a big name in boxing in London,” added Hennessy. “He is the big thing coming through, particularly now that he has the British Title. If the interest keeps building he could soon be defending it at somewhere like the Albert Hall or Alexandra Palace.”
Tickets for the Hennessy Sports ‘FIRST DEFENCE’ event at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday 20th October are available from ticketmaster on 0870 060 1795.
