26.11.05 – Undefeated German super middleweight contender Jürgen Brähmer scored an impressive seventh round knockout over Puerto Rican Henry Porras on a Universum boxing show at Wilhelm-Dopatka-Halle of Leverkusen, Germany, where he replaced the injured Felix Sturm as TV live event on ZDF. Only two fights after coming back from an involuntary three-year boxing interruption Jürgen Brähmer catches up with the international upper league of the 168 lb. class and in Germany is already topic number among boxing fans..
With his natural speed, his quick combinations and speedy reflexes the 27-year-old German completely outclassed his opponent. In round seven Brähmer had worn down his victim long enough and decided to go for the kill. The German knocked his opponent down three times until the fight was stopped at 1:52 of round seven.
Brähmer improved to 26-0 with 22 knockouts. Porras dropped to 30-6-1 with 22 knockouts.
Even though two major fights of the card had to be canceled – beside Felix Sturm also welterweight contender Michel Trabant suffered an injury in sparring – the event was able to convince the audience with international top boxing.
Bantamweight world champion Wladimir Sidorenko made an impressive first defense of his WBA title with a dominant twelve round unanimous decision (119:109 twice and 118:111) over Venezuelan Jose de Jesus Lopez. The 27-year-old small energy bundle from the Ukraine remained undefeated with a record of 18-0 and six knockouts. Lopez dropped to 21-6 with 16 knockouts.
In a very competitive double title fight at jr. welterweight Ukrainian Andreas Kotelnik beat his stable mate Mohamad Abdulaev from Uzbekistan by unanimous decision over twelve rounds and won the WBA intercontinental title and the WBO Asia Pacific belt. The official scores were 116:112 twice and 117:112.
In June Abdulaev failed in an attempt to lift the WBO title from Miguel Cotto in New York. One month later Kotelnik suffered a controversial loss in Nottingham to Englishman Junior Witter. By putting Abdulaev in against Kotelnik, their management Universum wanted to select the more promising 140 lb. fighter between these two near-champions.
Now the victorious Kotelnik, 24-2 (11), can hope for a shot at one of the major world titles whereas former Olympic champion Abdulaev, 15-3 (12), may consider to end his career.
During two of the undercard fights the injured Felix Sturm spoke to the audience through a microphone. He apologized and said he would like to make up for the canceled world title fight in April 2006 and then “win back what belongs to him”.
