19.11.05 – By Troy Ondrizek: The bout between David “The Tuaman” Tua and Calvin “The Boxing Banker” Brock is now set for January 28th in Atlantic City. Tua completed his portion of the task by squeaking by Cisse Salif with a Split Decision on October 21st. Calvin Brock needed to defeat David Bostice tonight, and he did by cruising to a ten round unanimous decision over the journeyman. Brock was never in trouble, but he failed to flash the power or overwhelming skill one might expect by a supposed future champion. Bostice has been laid out twice in the first round, once by an ancient forty-three year old Tim Witherspoon.
Bostice also was put away in the second round by current number one contender Wladimir Klitschko. If Brock failed to KO a common opponent as Wladimir, than it’s easy to speculate that Brock might not be ready to be a top contender yet.
However, Calvin Brock has chance to make a big statement in his bout with Tua. Brock also was more impressive in victory over a tougher opponent than his future adversary, in the fact that David Tua, known as a heavy-fisted fighter failed to impressively defeat, let alone knockout lowly rated Cisse Salif.
The January fight between Tua and Brock has the potential to be a blockbuster early on in the year, and shake things up in the Heavyweight division. If the two set-up fights that both fighters had are any precursor to what we will see in January, than the fight could be uneventful and remind us of Barrett/Rahman. I feel that this fight will set the tone for the year in the division, and I hope for all of us fans, that is has some excitement to it. My prediction is that Brock will be scared of Tua’s legendary but seemingly failing power, and Brock runs and fights from a distance scoring a boring UD.
On the undercard of the Brock/Bostice bout, fought one of the previously mentioned Heavyweight prospects, Malik Scott. In typical Malik fashion, he boxed and countered his way to an easy decision of little known Dennis Mckinney. Scott keeps his hopes alive of being a future contender. Hopefully, he will add some impressive KO’s along his journey and give us something to talk about.
