22.4.2005: Newly created Timebomb Promotions made a successful debut, despite several last-minute changes, when they kicked off with a four-bout card on Saturday (April 23) afternoon at the Pal Pal Gymnasium in Nairobi, Kenya. A fair crowd had turned up even though the main event featuring former African heavyweight champion Joseph Akhasamba was called off when his opponent pulled out, and the action was good from start to finish..
In a clash of former Kenyan champions David Kiilu proved too smart for Henry Jesai, and recorded a third round knockout victory. Kiilu held the national featherweight crown early in his career, while Jesai was at one point the welterweight king. This bout was made at lightweight, and the smaller man floored his adversary with a right hand for the full count. Kiilu, who is handled by Danish management company Risum Boxing, improved his record to 18-6-1 (9), and Jesai drops to 10-7-3 (4).
Featherweight prospect Collins Sunday Otieno remained undefeated with a six-round unanimous decision over former Kenyan Super Bantamweight champion Musa Njue. Otieno proved too fresh for his more experienced opponent, and upped his ledger to 4-0 (1). Njue falls to 6-9 (3), and is on a six-bout loosing streak.
Pro debutant Charles Kibuku was in too deep with Maurice Chule, who won by second round stoppage. Chule is a capable boxer, and was simply too big a handful for the newcomer. The winner is now 2-2-1 (1) according to BoxRec, but reportedly have more fights.
In a cruiserweight encounter, Atomic Onyango suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of veteran campaigner Lucas “Lucky Boy” Omondi. After three even rounds, Omondi connected with a well-placed right hand in the fourth, and scored an impressive knockout. The looser is now 2-4 (1), while it is uncertain what the new record of Omondi reads. If you go by the incomplete record at BoxRec, he improved to 2-8-1 (1).
A planned fight for middleweight crowd-pleaser Stephen Esonga was scrapped, when his opponents got sick and no substitute could be found in time. Timebomb Promotions plan to stage their second card already next month.
