01.02.05 – Hard-hitting and world-ranked Hector Velazquez of Tijuana, Mexico, faces slick-boxing Marcos Licona of Westminster, Calif., in the 10-round featherweight main event on a nationally and internationally televised “Commotion at the Ocean” professional boxing card presented by Sycuan Ringside Promotions Friday, Feb. 11, in San Diego..
Also on the card is undefeated lightweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., son of the legendary champion.
The eight-bout card takes place in the San Diego Convention Center.
Doors to the San Diego Convention Center open at 5 p.m. (Pacific) with the first fight starting at 5:30.
Tickets are priced from $15 to $75.
Chavez Jr. of Culiacan, Mexico, faces Leroy Newton of Michigan City, Ind., in a six-round lightweight fight.
Also on the card is Antonio Diaz of Coachella, Calif., brother of International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Julio Diaz, against Jose Luis Cruz of Mexico City in an eight-round welterweight bout.
Six-round fights feature undefeated lightweight Ricardo Dominguez, a teenager from Tucson, Ariz., against Derrick Moon of Fort Worth, Texas, and super featherweight Salvardor Cardenas from Culican against Anthony DelGado of Phoenix in a rematch.
Four-round fights include unbeaten super lightweight Eddie Mapula of Tijuana, Mexico, and the pro debut of female flyweight Heather Donoho of San Diego.
Opponents for Mapulu and Donoho will be determined.
The 29-year-old Velazquez, ranked No. 10 by the World Boxing Council, has a record of 39-10-2 with 29 knockouts and is the WBC Fecarbox featherweight champion.
He won the WBC Fecarbox title Aug. 23, 2004, in Tijuana with a fifth-round knockout of Concepcion Velasquez.
Velazquez won the International Boxing Association featherweight championship March 25, 2000, with a seventh-round knockout of Jesse Magana.
The 30-year-old Licona has a record of 21-7-1.
He won the World Boxing Organization North American Boxing Organization super bantamweight championship during 1999.
Velasquez and Licona have fought six current or former world champions between them.
Velazquez also has faced current International Boxing Federation junior featherweight champion Israel Vazquez, former WBC and IBF featherweight champ Kevin Kelley, ex-WBC featherweight king Guty Espadas and former WBC bantam and World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Raul Perez.
Licona has met current WBA and IBF featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and reigning WBC super bantamweight champ Oscar Larios.
Velazquez is coming off a second-round knockout of Marco Antonio Sandoval Nov. 22 in Tijuana while Licona is coming off a 10-round decision over Cristian Favela March 18 in Irvine, Calif.
The 18-year-old Chavez is taller than his famous father at 5-11 1/2, but is starting his career in similar fashion; he has a record of 14-0 with nine knockouts.
The 31-year-old Newton has a record of 5-5 with four knockouts.
The 28-year-old Antonio Diaz has a record of 40-5-1 with 28 knockouts. He fought Shane Mosley for the WBC welterweight championship during 2000 and has a 12-round decision over Cory Spinks, making him one of only two persons to beat the current world welterweight champion.
The 33-year-old Cruz has a record of 12-12-3 with four knockouts.
The 19-year-old Dominguez has a record of 7-0 with four knockouts.
The 22-year-old old Moon has a record of 9-5-1 with two knockouts.
The 26-year-old Cardenas has a record of 3-1 with three knockouts.
The 24-year-old DelGado has a record of 3-3-1 with no knockouts and took a four-round majority decision over Cardenas in their first meeting Oct. 10, 2004, in Tucson, Ariz.
The 20-year-old Mapula has a record of 5-0 with five knockouts.
The card will be televised live on Telefutura. However, the telecast will blacked out in the San Diego area.
