Tapia undercard announced

06.01.05 – The undercard for the January 22 “La Batalla En La Frontera” professional boxing event at the Dodge Arena headlined by five-time World Champion Johnny Tapia was announced with a strong field of local fighters set for action. The semi-main event will feature one of the Rio Grande Valley’s top local boxing prospects in Raul “El Tigre” Cazares who currently boasts an undefeated 8-0 record. The Edinburg native will take on Michael Soberanis (4-11) from San Antonio in an eight round Junior Middleweight match..

Cazares enters the ring following an impressive 2004 in which he went 3-0 including two victories at the Dodge Arena and his most recent fight, a unanimous decision victory over Álvaro Clinton Ayala in Hollywood California in October.

“Being a part of a show in the Valley is always special because it gives me the chance to show what I can do in front of my hometown fans,” says Cazares on his returning to the Rio Grande Valley to fight.

Also featured on January 22 will be one of the hot boxing prospects out of Mexico City, Cuauhtemoc “The Aztec Warrior” Vargas who is set for eight rounds of Featherweight action against an opponent still yet to be named.

In June of 2004, Vargas (12-0-1) scored the most important and impressive victory of his still undefeated career when he earned a TKO victory over then undefeated Erik Rodriguez of San Antonio.

Abraham Esquivel of Monterrey Mexico will be one of three fighters making his professional debut on the January 22 card when he takes on San Antonio native Ramiro Torres (0-3-1) in a four round Lightweight bout.

Also making his professional debut will be Ricky Valdez from Brownsville in a four round Light Heavyweight match against Mission resident Fidel Avila (3-3-1).

John Ruiz (2-1), from Alamo will battle Efran Diaz (Pro Debut), also from Mission, in a four round Middleweight bout.

Tickets for the event are priced at $15, $20, $30, $40, $50, $60 and $100 and are on sale at the Dodge Arena Box Office and all Dodge Arena outlets throughout the Valley. Tickets can also be purchased by phone at 866-RIO-TIXX.
