“Darwish Rumble 2” Press Conference Report

07.12.04 – A press conference was held today at the beautiful Robert Treat Hotel in Newark for this Thursday’s much anticipated “Darwish Rumble 2”. This is the second installment of the Darwish Brothers ‘North Jersey Boxing Series’ presented by the Darwish Brothers Knockout Promotions.. This exciting December 9th event features a 12-round WBC championship fight between Greg Wright and Prince Badi Ajamu. The card also features hot prospect and Paterson native Kendall ‘Rated R’ Holt as well as up and coming local prospects such as George Perez and Eric Graham.

Hani and Walid Darwish started off the press conference with this statement “This show is proof of our commitment to the boxing fans in North Jersey, this is our second fight and this time it features a great main event that will be televised on MSG and many other networks.”

The main event features a very compelling match up. Greg Wright is an 11 year veteran and the former NABF light heavyweight champion. Wright, (21-11-2 8 KOs) of Detroit Michigan, has never been stopped in 34 professional fights and is looking for a victory come Thursday. “I’m coming into this fight bringing everything I got, and hopefully what I got to give is more than what he has to give” stated Wright, “I didn’t come all the way here from Detroit to lose.” Wright always comes to fight and has been in the ring with some of boxing best such as former IBF super middle weight champion Charles Brewer, as well as world title contenders Dale Brown and Derrick Harmon.

Prince Badi Ajamu is knocking at the door for a world title shot. This all action fighter has stopped 5 out of his last 7 opponents. Badi, (21-2-1 12 KOs) of Camden, New Jersey, is determined to win the WBC Continental Americas Title. “I need that strap, said Ajamu [referring to the WBC championship belt] as much as he says he needs it, I have to have it.” Badi as well as Wright were very well spoken at today’s press conference, both of them showed the other respect. “It’s going to be a great fight….” said Ajamu in closing, “don’t miss it”.

Kendall ‘Rated R’ Holt was loud and loquacious as usual. The Darwish Brothers announced that Holt’s opponent will be the durable Juan Carlos Escobar (12-8-2 6 KOs) of Cuailcan, Mexico. “You can hit this guy with a sledge hammer and he will keep coming” said Walid Darwish, when describing Holt’s opponent. When it was Holt’s turn to speak, he responded: “You say you can hit the guy with a sledge hammer, well I got two right here!” Holt also made it clear that this fight is very important to him. A win would put him in the position to challenge undefeated 1996 U.S Olympian David Diaz for the number two spot in the WBO. Holt’s fights are always exciting and action packed and this one looks to be no different.

Local up and comers George Perez and Alex Perez were present and expressed that they were happy and excited to be on this terrific fight card. Both fighters are Newark natives and both of these young fighters have the potential to make a splash in the sweet science.

The Darwish Brothers have definitely put together an excellent show. Don’t miss it, be there to witness all the action live.
