5.12.04: Four of the biggest boxing-names of the Nairobi-area in Kenya returned with wins on the afternoon of Saturday December 4 at the Pal Pal Gymnasium. Athanaz Nzau, David Kiilu, Joseph Akhasamba and Geofrey Munica all did their jobs in impeccable fashion on this hastily arranged four-bout card. The show was originally planned to take place at prominent nightspot The Jam Rescue Club, but was on two days notice moved to the Pal Pal.
Super featherweight Athanaz Nzau returned after more than two years out of the ring, but had no difficulties disposing of the smaller Bernard Njoroge in three rounds of a scheduled six-rounder. Nzau, who is so far the only man to beat current WBA, WBC, WBO # 5 / IBF # 8 featherweight contender Spend Abazi of Denmark, used his longer reach and more fluid skills to pick Njoroge apart, before finishing him off in the third. Nzau is now 15-4-1 (5), and Njoroge drops to 3-4-1 (1).
David Kiilu, also fighting at super featherweight, was too clever for Musa Njui, and had no problems outscoring his foe over six rounds. Whenever Njui tried his luck, Kiilu always had the upper hand, and while the fight was pretty unspectacular, it was an entertaining encounter between useful boxers. Kiilu, who is something called East And Central African champ at featherweight, improved to 17-5-2 (8) with the win, and Njui´s 4-8-1 (3) record doesn’t flatter him. He claims more fights than registered by BoxRec and other record-keepers.
Veteran former WBB and African heavyweight champion, and two-time Olympian, Joseph Akhasamba schooled Anthony Musonye before lowering the bomb in the second to score the knockout. This fight was made at cruiserweight, and Akhasamba was simply too big a handful for the much younger visitor from Mombassa. All of Akhasamba´s losses has come in Europe against bigger men, and he is now 12-7-1 (8). Musonye lost for the second time as a pro, and goes to 3-2-1 (2).
In the final fight of the show, natural super featherweight Geofrey Munica took the trip up to lightweight and unanimously outscored Mombassa’s Bob Obala over six rounds. Munica, a solid fighter with good skills and decent power, thereby registered his second consecutive win since travelling to Thailand earlier this year where he was stopped in six by undefeated Terdsak Jandaeng in a bid for the WBO Asia Pacific featherweight crown, and improves his ledger to 11-5 (6).
Promoter of the show was Akhasamba, who took care of business both inside and outside the ring.
