Two-time WIBA champion Sumya Anani added to April 24 Staples center fight card

22.04.04 – LOS ANGELES – “ Two-time Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) champion and Christy Martin conqueror, Sumya Anani, will take on Lisa Holewyne on Saturday’s Vitali Klitschko-Corrie Sanders fight card at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. Holewyn’s original opponent, Lucia Rijker, was forced to withdraw due to a rib cartilage injury.

In the main event, the leading contenders in the World Boxing Council (WBC), Vitali Klitschko (33-2, 32 KOs) and Corrie Sanders (39-2, 29 KOs), will box for the WBC heavyweight title. It is the second time in 45 years a world heavyweight championship fight has been held in Los Angeles.

Anani (22-1-1, 10 KOs), of Jamaica and now living in Kansas City, Mo., dealt Martin her initial setback by winning a 10-round decision on Dec. 18, 1997. Anani, 6-0-1 in her past seven starts, won the WIBA lightweight belt with a 10-round decision over Elizabeth Mueller on May 11, 2001. Eleven months later, Anani registered a fourth-round TKO over Jane Couch to earn the WIBA 140-pound belt. In her first defense, she scored a fifth-round knockout over Holewyne on Nov. 2, 2002.

Holewyne (20-12-1, 6 KOs), of Houston by way of Kawaii, Hawaii, captured the WIBF 140-pound crown with a 10-round decision over Vicki Woods on Oct. 28, 2000. In her sole defense, Holewyne outpointed Maruscha Sjauwenwa across 10 rounds on April 21, 2001. In her last outing, Holewyne won a six-round decision over Brenda Drexel on March 27, 2004.

The Klitschko-Sanders 12-round fight will highlight a six-fight card presented by K2 Promotions, Inc., in association with Universum Box-Promotion, Lion Promotions and AEG. Doors open at 3:45 p.m. The live card starts at 4 p.m.
