Interview with Monte Barrett

13.03.04 – By Ike Enwereuzor – www.Jacboxing.com – Heavyweight contender Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett of Queens, New York with a professional Boxing record of (29-3,16 Ko’s)will make his first outting of the year since his controversial loss to unbeaten Joe Mesi in December 2003 at Madison Square Garden, New York City. Barrett is expected to return to action on March 27, at the Alltel Arena, in Little Rock, AR against undefeated WBO #5 rated heavyweight prospect Dominick Guinn (24-0, 17 Ko’s). This event will be televised Live on HBO.

This what the top heavyweight contender had to say about his past, present and future:

Ike: How is your training coming along?

Barrett: Everything is looking good, we’re ready to eat. I’m going to handle Dominick his first loss. It’s not personal, we’re good associates and stuff, but this is business, baby! I have to get him out of there soon. My rib is hurting already, so I’m ready to eat that food, and I’m coming hard and break him up.

Ike: What’s your impression of Dominick Guinn?

Barrett: He’s a good fighter, but I’ll prove to the world I’m a better fighter on March 27. No, disrespect to Jermine Taylor, but my fight with Guinn is the main event. Just like my fight with Joe Mesi was the main event last time I fouught. No one wanted to see the Klitschko-Johnson fight. It’s going to be a fight! I have to give special thanks to Stans Hoffman and Lou Debella for the
the opportunity. Stans is like a father figure to me, and I love him; He’s like an angel to me. I also have to thank my new trainer, Harold Knight for getting me in the best of shape of my life. I know Shelley Finkel said some things about me a while ago, even when I was an amateur, so I’m going to Dominick’s hometown to hand him his first defeat.

Ike: Please tell us about your last fight against Joe Mesi. How would describe your performance?

Barrett: I’ll give myself a B-, even though I know I won that fight but they gave it to Mesi. He’s moving on with his business, and I’m moving on with mine. But I’d like to get a rematch down the line, but I know Joe Mesi don’t want a piece of Monte Barrett again. That fight with him could not have been less than a draw, but we all know the politics in Boxing. I know I could have done better with him also. I just have to bring all this to Dominick, so I hope he’ll be ready for this. Boxing fans from Buffalo want me to move to Buffalo, because I proved I was a true warrior Now thay want to kick Joe Mesi out of the town. I got a lot of respect from these fans, so I thank all my fans old and new ones. Joe Deguardia is a ruthless promoter. I had only 4 fights last year, and no money. You all know what he did to former World champions like Lou Devalle, Aaron Davis, Antonio Tarver and some other Boxers.

Ike: What should Boxing fans expect from your fight with Dominick?

Barrett: I’m hitting like George Foreman. I’m a different fighter now. I made a lot of corrections from my last fight, so I have to put all I learn in training in line for March 27. It don’t matter what people say anymore. It’s going to be me & Dominick in the ring, and I know what I can do.

Ike: Your prediction on Mosley-Wright bout?

Barrett: They are both good fighters and good friends. I’ll say let the best and more hungry man take it. I can’t wait to see my man Zab Judah win the undisputed welterweight championship. I know he’ll beat Corey Spinks. After my victory, and his, we’ll have a big party.

Ike: Any predictions on Klitschko-Brewster bout April 10?

Barrett: I’m going for Lemon Brewster. I think he’ll beat Wladmir. I’d like to get my rematch with Wladmir, also, but I have to finish with Dominick first.

Ike: Any comments to your fans?

Barrett: I have to thank all my fans for their support, especially after all the trouble with Joe Deguardia. Monte Barrett is still here, so nobody can break me but myself. I’m on a mission to become a world champion. The division is wide open! I thank my fans for all the love they have shown me all these years. Thanks to those that love me and those that hate me, too. I feel anixious to step into ring. The hardest part is the training. The fight is the easy part – Just 30 minutes work.
