Enzo Maccarinelli: I want this title more than anything in my career

Enzo Maccarinelli (38-6, 30 KOs) travels to Rostock, Germany to challenge Juergen Braehmer (42-2, 31 KOs) for the WBA World Light Heavyweight Championship on April 5.

Maccarinelli, the former WBO Cruiserweight Champion, knows what it takes to become a world champion and makes no secret of his desire to take the title from Braehmer in front of the German’s home fans.

Q: What do you think of your opponent Juergen Braehmer?

EM: I really respect him. He was a top quality amateur, who beat Ricky Hatton twice I believe. He is a very tough, hard man who has been around almost as long as me.

Q: How have you been preparing for this fight?

Khan: Mayweather has to fight me if he wants to be global star

It’s not enough that Golden Boy Promotions has set him up as the chief support on Floyd Mayweather Jr’s May 3rd fight card against Luis Collazo instead of the arguably much more dangerous Keith Thurman, but now Khan is trying to entice Mayweather into fighting him by telling him about all the fans that will be watching him fight from India and Pakistan if he chooses him to fight next.

Khan figures that there are over 1 billion people in India and over 300 million in Pakistan, with many of those people choosing to watch the fight.

Juergen Braehmer getting ready for Enzo Maccarinelli fight

Juergen Braehmer getting ready for Enzo Maccarinelli fight

By Gerhardt Foath: In a battle of aging 175lb fighters, WBO light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (42-2, 31 KO’s) is getting ready for his title defense against 33-year-old former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (39-6, 30 KO’s) at the Stadthalle, Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

Braehmer picked up the vacant WBA World light heavyweight title last December with a 12 round unanimous decision win over Marcus Oliveira. This was the idea way for Braehmer to win a world title, because his chances of beating the other top fighters in the division were pretty much zero. Braehmer is a good Euro level fighter, but he’d stand no chance against light heavyweights like Bernard Hopkins, Sergey Kovalev, Adonis Stevenson and probably even Beibut Shumenov.

Khan says Mayweather told him he’d one of his last three fights

Khan says Mayweather told him he’d one of his last three fights

Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) says he received a personal phone call from Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently and told by him that he’d be one of his last three fights of his career. Mayweather didn’t say at which point that Khan would get a fight against him, but it’s likely to be sooner rather than later depending on how things go with Khan’s fight against veteran Luis Collazo on the undercard of Mayweather’s unification bout against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana on May 3rd.

The chances are high that if Khan destroys Collazo in impressive fashion, he’ll wind up facing Mayweather at the end of the year if Khan’s schedule permits.

Keith Thurman faces Julio Diaz on 4/26 in Carson, California

Keith Thurman faces Julio Diaz on 4/26 in Carson, California

Julio Diaz (40-9-1, 29 KO’s) will be facing interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (22-0, 20 KO’s) next on 4/26 at the StubHub center in Carson, California in a fight that will be broadcast by Showtime. It looks like Al Haymon and Golden Boy Promotions don’t want to take any chances that Thurman, 25, doesn’t get beaten before he gets his title shot against the WBA welterweight champion.

Thurman gets an easy fight against Diaz, who is coming off of back to back losses to Amir Khan and Shawn Porter. That’s rare to have a fighter with two straight losses fighting against a champion, even an interim title holder like Thurman. I wonder how many more times Diaz will get used in this fashion, because at some point it’s going to look really bad having him brought out to face Golden Boy’s fighters with so many consecutive losses.

Wladimir Klitschko: Leapai is so strong that he doesn’t need technique or strategy

IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (61-3, 51 KO’s) is very wary of the huge power of his opponent Alex Leapai (30-4-3, 24 KO’s), and he’s vowing now to underestimate him in their fight on April 26th at the Koenig Pilsener Arena, Oberhausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Leapai pulled off an upset in defeating Denis Boytsov by a 10 round unanimous decision last November in their WBC title eliminator bout in Germany. Boytsov was expected to win the fight handily, but he found himself getting dropped by Leapai and dominated.
