A Lesson of Hype & Humility: GGG, Rousey, & Pacquiao

A Lesson of Hype & Humility: GGG, Rousey, & Pacquiao

(A very candid Editorial by resident boxing scribe Vivek “Vito” Wallace)

There’s been a lot of talk about the perceived negativity aimed towards Ronda Rousey in light of her recent loss. In an effort to provide some level of clarity, I’d like to examine this topic a bit closer. Ronda is a very solid fighter with a great story. But what some need to realize is that there are fans who literally hate to see the media pick and choose who it wants to build up and who it wants to tear down. The word “hate” is probably a bit strong, but under the circumstances, most would agree necessary.

Roach: Standing Firm on Cotto KO Prediction

Roach: Standing Firm on Cotto KO Prediction

Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach, is standing firm on his prediction that the WBC middleweight champion will knock out enormously popular Mexican challenger, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on Saturday night in Las Vegas, live on HBO PPV/Boxnation (UK).

Roach has been very vocal in his pre-fight prediction, as is always the case with the esteemed 7x trainer of the year, and is claiming that a fight plan based on aggressive bodywork will put an end to the younger Mexican, who he has called ‘not that great a fighter’ in the build-up, citing Alvarez’s tendency to fade and gas-out as a driving reason for his ‘mid-rounds’ KO prediction.

Frampton: 'Quigg Gets Given Titles / Rigo is the Real WBA Champ

Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg came head-to-head today in London for the first of the 3 city press tour dates to promote their IBF/WBA 122 lb super bantamweight unification on February 27th, with Frampton continuing to assert that it is he, and not Quigg, who is the genuine world champion.

IBF boss, Frampton, believes Quigg’s team have also taken confidence in the fact that he had a less than auspicious start to his US debut last time out in July, touching down twice early against little known Mexican, Alejandro Gonzalez Jr before going on to win; events he feels brought about the fight.

Video: An Ode to Gennady Golovkin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoXFwKfZCGs

When lineal middleweight champion Miguel Cotto squares off against Canelo Alvarez in a highly anticipated match-up this Saturday, few observers will be more interested in the outcome than Gennady Golovkin – the unified middleweight champion who is widely regarded as the best middleweight in the world. Golovkin is currently the WBC mandatory, and the organization’s president Mauricio Sulaiman has gone on record stating that the Cotto-Canelo winner must face Golovkin next. But will the winner actually grant Golovkin his deserved shot? And if not, will the WBC actually enforce its own mandate? These things remain to be seen, but we may have a clearer idea of the answers depending on the result of this weekend’s championship showdown.

An Open Letter to Holly Holm

An Open Letter to Holly Holm

I’ll admit that I don’t typically watch women’s boxing, and it is seldom available on any cable subscription package in Canada. However, I watched 2 Canadian women with the Pan Am Gold a few months back and used to watch Christy Martin on Don King undercards. I had never seen you box while you were boxing, and though I’d heard her name, I watched my first videos of you as a mixed martial artist.

Holly, you demonstrated in your fights prior to last night’s MMA bout with Ronda Rousey a good sense of ring space and how to use it effectively. More importantly, you demonstrated an effective use of the southpaw position that, while seldom mentioned in MMA discussion, is a key combative variable in boxing.

Joshua: ‘I’d Love to Fight Fury’

Joshua: 'I'd Love to Fight Fury'

Rising British heavyweight prospect, Anthony Joshua, claims he remains calm and focused ahead of his Box Office showdown with Dillian Whyte on December 12, at London’s O2, though after he dispatches Whyte as he believes he inevitably will, a future showdown with Tyson Fury appeals.

While Joshua’s British and Commonwealth title fight with Whyte is a sought after domestic clash, the card’s PPV price tag has provoked the ire of many fans for it’s failure to include ANY bona fide, GENUINE world title fights, with promoter Eddie Hearn attempting to justify it by claiming the gold medal winning Olympian is already a Box Office fighter after just 14 one-sided blow-outs against limited opposition.

Ruslan Knocks Bradley Out in a Rematch says Joel Diaz

Ruslan Knocks Bradley Out in a Rematch says Joel Diaz

Ruslan Provodnikov’s new trainer, Joel Diaz, believes that if his Siberian charge was to rematch his old fighter Timothy Bradley, then this time he wins by knockout.

Diaz has recently split from WBO 147 champ, Bradley, whom he had guided since day one of his pro career, and was in his corner for the American’s 2013 fight with Provodnikov, in which he won a hugely entertaining and hard fought decision in which both fighters absorbed a lot of punishment.
