Yildirim’s coach: “I am the colonel, he is my Rambo”
Coach Ahmet Öner is ready to send his boxer Avni Yildirim (16-0, 10 KOs) into war against Chris Eubank Jr. (25-1, 19 KOs) on October 7 at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart, Germany.
“Our relationship is like a colonel and a soldier,” said Ahmet Öner. “Sometimes I call him John Rambo, and I am Colonel Trautman. He is my Rambo, I made him and I am very happy with what I’ve made.”
Last night many fans were upset about the scoring of Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many even say the scoring was a business decision which implicates corruption or Adalaide Byrd just had an off night. She is being dragged through the mud by the media fans, and anybody else who has an opinion on last night bout.
It is a bout we have speculated about for many months, some even years, a bout celebrated before its own crowning. It served as our foundation, bolstering our bias that the Mayweather- McGregor circus was merely a heist impairing the pockets of Boxing and MMA fans alike. This was a bout brought upon by boxing purists. I lined my bets with my primary broker as many of you did; I had already picked my winner with unwavering confidence. Tonight’s action has long been on our hearts and tongues and while disappointment flew far from our minds.
Billy Joe Saunders retained his WBO middleweight title last night, with a less than thrilling, but wide decision win over Willie Monroe Jr. and now the unbeaten southpaw is planning his next fight for December.
Saunders has long since been calling out Gennady Golovkin, the man who holds all the other belts at 160, but speaking at last night’s post-fight presser, as quoted by Nick Parkinson of ESPN.com, Saunders said he doesn’t think GGG – who of course boxed to a controversial draw with Canelo Alvarez in last night’s massive bout – will be ready to fight again as soon as December.
In a weird, unsettling way, it is perhaps fitting that after last night’s massive world middleweight title fight showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez – called by many the biggest 160 pound title fight showdown since Sugar Ray Leonard-Marvin Hagler from 30 years ago – we were left with a hugely controversial decision.
The fierce debate has already begun: with many people calling the drawn verdict a disgrace, saying that GGG was robbed, with others still saying they feel Canelo deserved a close win; while others yet say they agree with the draw. There are indeed parallels between GGG D12 Canelo and Leonard WS12 Hagler.
Once again boxing fans are left with a sour taste in their mouths after an overly hype fight does not quite deliver. Not to mention we had the dreaded horrible scorecard rear it’s ugly head.. In the aftermath of Canelo vs Golovkin here are five things we learned tonight.
1. Canelo is a better boxer than advertised. I was quite surprised with how well Canelo boxed in this fight. Not to say he is a bad boxer. Speed was just never his calling card. Technique, precision and power were his tools of the trade. However tonight Canelo showed excellent footwork. Great handspeed and combinations. He was very elusive at times as well. Canelo is becoming a more complete fighter. A scary thought for the rest of the Middleweight division.
Tonight in Las Vegas, after fans witnessed an excellent, truly engrossing battle that went right down to the wire, middleweight king Gennady Golovkin retained his belts by way of a draw – a result that is sure to be viewed as THE most controversial of the year.
Scores were an insane 118-110 to Canelo, 115-113 for GGG and 114-114. Simply put, these two have to do it again. Golovkin is now 37-0-1(33). Canelo is now 49-1-2(34).
Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) retained their respective titles in a back-in-forth war that was ruled a draw on Mexican Independence Day in front of a sold-out crowd of 22,358 raucous fans at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas presented live by HBO Pay-Per-View and before 17,931 Closed Circuit attendees.
In a fight that failed to live up to the buildup, Billy Joe Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) successfully defended his WBO World middleweight title on Saturday night in beating former world title challenger Willie Monroe Jr. (21-3, 6 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK.
Callum Smith (23-0, 17 KOs) fought an excellent fight in beating Erik Skoglund (26-1, 12 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision in super middleweight action on Saturday night in his first fight in the quarter finals of the World Boxing Super Series at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. The 6’3” Smith unloaded on Skoglund in round 11 to knock him down.
