As always, any Mayweather Jr. news is colossal news, and as soon as Floyd announced his next opponent the boxing community went wild.
Did Mayweather Jr. make a big mistake by picking Saul Alvarez as his next foe? Will Canelo finally expose Mayweather’s age? Is Floyd finally picking a formidable opponent?
Those are some of the questions that boxing fans are currently chewing over on various forums. They are saying that Saul will make Mayweather Jr. run, and that Floyd has finally made a brave move by picking someone who poses a true threat to him.
Carl “The Cobra” Froch has been sounding a lot like Floyd ”Money” Mayweather in the days following his huge payback win over Mikkel Kessler, which was broadcast by HBO in the United States, and Sky Sports PPV live from the O2 Arena in London, England. In so many words, Carl Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn are saying, “all roads lead to Carl Froch”. Like Floyd as well, he says he has 3 or 4 major fights before he calls it a day. 
Wow! Who’d a thunk it? Little Money is apparently going to do it. He’s finally going to fight someone who the fans want him to fight. His right hand man Leonard Ellerbe is already spouting talk about Little Money beating Alvarez even if he weighs two hundred pounds. That already seems to be a stretch of the truth, because, according to more than one source, it looks as though there will be a “catch weight” of 152 imposed?. Do they (Money Team) know something about Alvarez we don’t?
If I was WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez I would pinch myself because he has been given a huge advantage in what will become the most important fight of his life. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is clearly underestimating his opponent by not calling for a catch-weight or a rehydration limit. This will hurt Floyd greatly and he may soon regret this dubious decision!
As I grabbed my tea and began to check the sports news the headlines read; Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. Canelo “Ginger” Alvarez is on for September 14, 2013! I nearly jumped out of my chair with excitement. Finally, Mayweather is fighting a younger, bigger, stronger opponent who has the power and zip to knock him out. No disrespect to Robert Guerrero, but most people who follow boxing knew he didn’t have the skills and the speed to deal with Mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. just revealed that he’ll be facing Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will take place at a catch-weight of 152 lbs, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. That still gives Canelo a big advantage because he only has to go two pounds lower than the normal 154 weight limit. If Mayweather had asked for a catch-weight at 150, then it would be a lot tougher on Canelo because he’s so huge for the junior middleweight class in terms of weight.
