Tyson Fury-Steve Cunningham: No Easy Assignment For Tyson’s U.S Debut

fury67By James Slater: Tyson Fury already enjoys at least something approaching a decent profile in America today, and now the 20-0(14) giant is bursting with anticipation over his American debut. U.S fight fans who have already formed an opinion of the 24-year-old (most of them through seeing his recent fights, against American imports Vinny Maddalone and Kevin Johnson, on Wealth T.V) will get to see Fury in the flesh on April 20th – at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York, no less.

Fury deserves credit for the quality foe he and his team have accepted for his U.S debut, too. Former IBF cruiserweight champ Steve “U.S.S” Cunningham may be 36-years-old and he may have picked up just a single heavyweight win since moving up from 200-pounds; yet most fans who saw the Philadelphian’s recent, Dec. 2012 clash with another former cruiser champ, in Tomasz Adamek, feel Cunningham deserved the points victory. In a rematch of their 2008 thriller, Cunningham lost a debatable 12-round split decision. Cunningham, 25-5(12) was disgusted with the result.

Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez WILL take place on March 16th

By Jeff Sorby: Contrary to the news that came out yesterday about IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez saying a fight between him and WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns isn’t a done deal for March 16th, Frank Warren Promotions, the promoter for Burns, is saying the fight is going to take place on that date.

East Side Boxing has obtained an a signed letter of acceptance from Vazquez’s promoter Juan Carlos Torres of Zanfer Promotions that confirms the agreement for the Burns-Vazquez fight on March 16th. The acceptance was signed on January 10th, 2013.

East Side Boxing also obtained an e-mail from Torres to Frank Warren Promotions matchmaker Dean Powell on January 10th that confirms the fight four days prior to Mr. Warren announcement of the fight in a press conference in London.

Tyson Fury vs Steve Cunningham on April 20 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden

fury544Explosive 6’9″ heavyweight contender and former unbeaten, Irish, Commonwealth and British Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, 20-0, 14 KO’s, will make his New York debut on Saturday afternoon, April 20th when he takes on former cruiserweight World Champion Steve USS Cunningham, 25-5, 12 KO’s, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

This fight is an official IBF Heavyweight Voluntary Eliminator fight for the #2 position between #9, Tyson Fury and #12, Steve Cunningham. The winner will become #2 and must meet #1 or the leading available contender to establish the mandatory challenger for Heavyweight King Wladimir Klitschko. The fight will be broadcast at 4PM ET on NBC as a special 2 hour afternoon presentation of NBC Sports Fight Night.

“Cunningham’s got all the tools; a former World Champion, good fighter, he’s got a lot of skill. I’m looking to put on a devastating performance; the best of my career to date.” said Fury. “I’m absolutely ecstatic to be fighting at Madison Square Garden; it goes back in history and I can’t wait to put my name with a long list of Champions who have fought there – I’m a historian of boxing myself so this is definitely the pinnacle of my career so far.”

Can Burns, Anyone At 135 Test Flashy, Classy Adrien Broner?

By James Slater – I think most fight fans are in agreement right now: it will take a formidable 140-pound fighter to test, much less defeat, blossoming superstar Adrien Broner. Scotland’s reigning WBO lightweight champ (and soon to be IBF title challenger) Ricky Burns disagrees, naturally, but is there really a 135-pounder capable of clipping “The Problem’s” wings?

Broner was expected to be too much for Welshman Gavin Rees last night in Atlantic City, and the formbook was obeyed (despite the sheer heart and guts “The Rock” showed!). But how special a talent does the unbeaten 23-year-old look! His hand speed is amazing, Broner’s power and accuracy aren’t far behind and, to make things worse for any of his opponents, Broner has such a varied number of wicked punches in his arsenal – left hooks, right hooks, uppercuts from either hand, particularly his right, right hand leads and body shots. Broner seems to have it all.

What this latest Cincinnati Cobra has in his future is one huge selection of would-be super-fights!

A Burns showdown would be a major attraction, especially if Burns can add the IBF belt to his WBO by defeating Mexican string been Miguel Vazquez next month. But there is precious little else for Broner at the weight – unless Cuban sensation Yuriorkis Gamboa can relocate his top form and persuade his promoters to land him the fight. The really big match-ups, the testing fights that promise to bring out the best in the “Floyd Mayweather Junior clone” will come at 140 and maybe beyond.

How did you get into boxing initially?

I was a bit boisterous and naughty at school, so my Grandad suggested to my Dad that I do a bit of boxing to release some excess energy. I was 9 when I started and loved it from the beginning. Initially all I wanted to do was spar and I didn’t like the fitness side of it, but once I started having fights, I realised how important the fitness was.

You won a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Was that the point where you and everyone around you believed that you could go on and win a medal at the Olympic Games?

It was actually a disappointment to get bronze at the Commonwealth Games as I was expected to come back with Gold, and to top it all I didn’t even win a medal at the World Championships! The experience and the buzz I got at the big competitions did however make me more determined to work hard and earn a place at the Olympics.

The fight was televised on the ‘Unfinished Business’ card on Sky Sports which was headlined by the European Super Bantamweight title clash between Carl Frampton and Kiko Martinez.

After a disappointing and emotional 2012 the Limerick native was back in Ireland looking to reinstate his middleweight credentials. Andy was entering a new phase in his career after the passing of his Hall of Fame trainer Emmanuel Steward. Manny was more than a boxing coach to the Irishman, he was a friend, a companion and an inspiration. As the infamous Kronk Gym closed its doors Lee had no option but to uproot his training base. The 2004 Olympian teamed up with Adam Booth in November as he began his career rehabilitation following a crushing loss to Julio Chavez Jr. in June 2012.

TONY THOMPSON believes he is just days away from ruining all hopes of David Price and Tyson Fury meeting.
The American double world title challenger (36-3) meets British and Commonwealth champion Price (15-0) in a 12 round international heavyweight contest at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Saturday February 23.

Price v Fury is the biggest domestic clash right now, and purses bids were due to be held on Wednesday, but Tyson pulled out.

When Tyson first came to you, his conditioning was sub-par and he was more a good fighter, as opposed to a good boxer. 18 months later and his conditioning has improved dramatically, he’s professional in his approach to fights, has solid boxing fundamentals, and has progressed leaps and bounds technically. How happy are you with his progress and do you expect a similar rate of progress between now and in another 18 months?

I’m delighted with his development and have put in endless hours every day over the last 12 months in particular. Every single area is painstakingly gone through. He is constantly improving technically, as well as in terms of conditioning, and come April we will see another level in Tyson again.

How did you rate Tyson’s performance last time out against Kevin Johnson? On the Channel 5 coverage, you were heard advising Tyson to stick to the gameplan and not allow the crowd to influence his boxing, so were you concerned at that point that Tyson might lose focus and try too hard to ‘entertain’ the crowd with a grandstand finish?

Fury hoping Wladimir will fight him on April 6th

fury34By Michael Collins: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko needs an opponent for his April 6th fight date in Germany, and thus far there isn’t anyone that his management team has picked out for him. Odlanier Solis was reportedly ruled out for Wladimir, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Unbeaten British heavyweight #4 WBC Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) is hoping he’ll get the fight with the 6’6” Ukrainian. In fact, Fury seems almost desperate to get the fight because WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko likely won’t be fighting Fury anytime soon if ever.

Fury said on his twitter page “Klitschko, if you fight Solis you’re a p***y! Fight me!. Solis is a fat s**t! He got KO’d by Vitali in 2.”
