Ricky Burns – Man of Steel

Ricky Burns - Man of Steel

The polysemic name of Matchroom’s Saturday bill in Glasgow, ‘Man of Steel’, refers to the titanium plate inserted into the jaw of Ricky Burns and, by extension, to the sheer toughness of his character exhibited through his perseverance to hear the final bell as he battled through ten rounds with a broken jaw, courtesy of Raymundo Beltran during their last September bout, and followed by the absolute determination to get back in the ring after the mending operation and healing.

Nobody need once again to point out the obvious that Burns was extremely fortunate to have retained his title against Beltran with the decision of a draw, but it is worth noting that the WBO appointed judges for Saturday’s defence against Crawford will have this in mind and are likely to score many of the potentially close rounds to the American in order to prevent any further stigma of controversy and/or accusations of ‘hometown favouritism’;

Mayweather Jr. Picks Maidana, Leaving Khan In Search For His Next Rival

Mayweather Jr. Picks Maidana, Leaving Khan In Search For His Next Rival

The night when Marcos Maidana had achieved something that most boxing fans did not expect him to, at least not in the fashion that he did it in, by beating Adrien Broner with somewhat an indifferent, casual fashion, the thought of Maidana vs. Mayweather Jr. was born.

There is a respectable number of boxing fans suggesting that Adrien Broner wasn’t himself that night, and that maybe Marcos Maidana simply got lucky, but all that seems irrelevant after seeing Maidana make an easy night of an opponent that was supposed to be the next virtuoso in the sport of boxing.

While the idea of Maidana vs. Mayweather Jr. was born, there was another name that has been carefully and consistently attaching itself to the Mayweather Jr. fight for a long time: Amir Khan.

Old Money? Floyd Mayweather Junior turns 37 today

Old Money? Floyd Mayweather Junior turns 37 today

Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Junior celebrates his 37th birthday today. While fight fans the world over await “Money’s” belated announcement on just who he will fight on May 3rd, Mayweather has been enjoying his birthday by taking in a game and betting some big bucks as he loves to do.

Whoever Floyd winds up fighting next, and in subsequent fights post May 3rd, most if not all people fully expect him to be able to keep his perfect unbeaten record; partly because of his boxing brilliance, partly because of Mayweather’s unwillingness to take any risks (by fighting Manny Pacquiao, or making a historic move up to middleweight and a potentially rough fight with Gennady Golovkin – these two fights being those most fans bring up as the ones they’d most like to see Mayweather take).

Left-Hook Lounge: Mayweather (Decision and Legacy), Khan’s Rant, and Bradley/Pacquiao Testing Fiasco!

Left-Hook Lounge: Mayweather (Decision and Legacy), Khan's Rant, and Bradley/Pacquiao Testing Fiasco!

Melvin A. (Cincinnati, OH): It appears Mayweather will take the Maidana fight. We haven’t seen Mayweather against a really fast fighter since Judah, so I liked Khan as the option. Why Maidana? And how can you explain your Facebook comment that this fight will be “epic”?

Vivek W. (ESB): How can I support Maidana as the option? Pretty easily, actually! In only three words I can lay out a case far stronger than any most would use to combat it: “HE EARNED IT”! I can understand questions relative to how Guerrero, or even Ortiz landed a shot; but with Maidana, there’s no such question. The guy earned it! When we look at Maidana’s past, what I like is the fact that this is a fighter who has been through all the elements of the sport. He has celebrated victory and dealt with the torment relative to defeat. Through it all, he’s still standing, and making great improvement every time he enters the ring. Robert Garcia has done a very admirable job with him, and the victory over Broner was proof of this.

Cinderella Man displays tenacious Fighting Pride

YouTube video
Anybody who watched Matchroom’s ‘Fighting Pride’ show live on Sky Sports last night had witnessed something special; the fight fans that were present at Hull’s Ice Arena are truly the lucky ones for the event was one that will not be forgotten anytime soon.

On paper the evening looked promising with a few intriguing match-ups but nobody could possibly have been expecting the drama and excitement that ran through pretty much the whole of the four hour broadcast.

There is one fighter who featured on the bill whom I want to pay particular attention to but first I will briefly run through the evening’s action.

The first bout was a contest for the British super-bantamweight title, vacated by Kid Galahad as he seeks European honours, between Gavin McDonnell and Leigh Wood. Alongside such boxers as Kell Brook and Kid Galahad, real name Abdul Barry Awad, Wood fights out of the Ingle Gym and exhibits the slippery and awkward style that the gym is famed for.

Khan’s contingency plan

Khan’s contingency plan

It would be nice to think that the line has been drawn through the whole Mayweather and Khan chronicles, at least for the time being anyway, but it is difficult to imagine that Khan has seriously discarded any ambition of being handed the May 3rd slot against the number one pound-for-pound king.

Yesterday Khan sent out a stream of tweets suggesting that the fight was dead; whether he actually knows anything official or not can only be speculated but it appears that he has had enough of Mayweather’s lack of communication and is moving on to a plan B. There is however a hint of suggestion that Khan may not be revealing all, given how he wishes luck to Maidana in the Mayweather fight, against the probable scenario where he is just regarding the fight’s other front-runner.

Opportunities within the sport of boxing are very few and far in between. But when a hungry, young fighter does receive the chance to showcase his talents on one of the biggest stages of the sport, he is expected to put forth his finest effort.

Tonight, from the Edgewater Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, eight talented Lightweight fighters will compete in the single elimination “Boxcino 2014” tournament, staged by Artie Pellulo and Banner Promotions. The quarterfinals portion of the playoff will be broadcast this evening on ESPN’s popular boxing series, “Friday Night Fights”, with a start time of 9PM EST.

The highly regarded sports franchise has become somewhat of a breeding ground for future stars of boxing, and have provided much needed exposure for budding young prizefighters.

Ray Austin Begins His Comeback Tonight In Cleveland

Ray Austin Begins His Comeback Tonight In Cleveland

Perennial heavyweight contender Ray Austin returns to the ring tonight in Cleveland. The match — against Earl Ladson — is Austin’s first in two and a half years. “I’m getting back into the heavyweight business,” he says. “I’m taking on all comers…it don’t matter who they are. I’m not looking for media fights, that ain’t gonna do it. I want to fight guys in the squared circle. Tell the rest of the heavyweights that all they gotta do is sign their name on the dotted line. That will make me happy.”

The Cleveland, Ohio native, who has been fighting professionally since 1998, is now 42-years-old. For a professional boxer, obviously, this is an advanced age. But Austin is not daunted. “It feels like I’m 32, to be honest,” he states. The 6’6″, 246 lbs slugger reports that he has had no difficulty resuming training after his layoff.”Technically, I was never laid off,” he explains. “I have always trained two or three times a week, even when I was out of the ring for two years. Preparing to fight comes naturally to me. It’s like learned behavior. I’m used to doing certain things.”
