Lineal middleweight champion Miguel Cotto made the first defense of his middleweight crown against former unified middleweight champion Daniel Geale in front of a packed crowd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The bout took place at a contractually agreed upon catch weight of 157 pounds, which caused displeasure among many boxing fans who are sick and tired of the recent catch weight trend. Cotto dominated the action in the fight where his left hook to the body and face led the charge in his attack. Cotto looked fresh, fast, and strong, whereas Geale seemed lethargic, timid, and uncertain. Cotto ultimately finished matters in round 4, when Geale decided not to continue after suffering two vicious knock downs during that stanza.

Many fans were hoping that Cotto would next face his most deserving middleweight challenger, the uncrowned middleweight king, Gennady Golovkin. Originally it was stipulated that the winner of Cotto vs Geale would be mandated to defend the WBC title against Golovkin, but the WBC since switched its stance, and is allowing Cotto one more voluntary before a supposed date with Golovkin becomes inevitable. It was suspected by most that a Cotto victory over Geale would pave the way, instead, to a showdown against Mexican Saul Alvarez. Cotto confirmed this in his post fight interview with Max Kellerman, where he expressed a desire to face Canelo, and he showed zero interest in a bout with Golovkin in an almost comical moment.

So will Miguel Cotto or the future winner of a potential looming bout between Cotto and Canelo finally grant Triple G his well deserved and long overdue chance to fight the true middleweight champion? Is Cotto-Canelo inevitably next? Should Gennady Golovkin abandon his efforts at 160, and move on to greater challenges north at 168 pounds, where a rumored match-up against Carl Froch seems a very real possibility?
