WBA President Mendoza says Team-Jacobs have sent an offer to Golovkin, fight could happen next

It seems “regular” WBA middleweight champion Danny Jacobs is serious about wanting to fight world ruler Gennady Golovkin next. According to WBA President Gilberto Mendoza, who spoke with Sky Sports, negotiations between the two sides have started in earnest and Jacobs’ handlers have sent a financial offer to GGG’s promoter Tom Loeffler. Of course, we do not know how good, or fair an offer this is, but Mendoza says that if the two sides cannot reach a deal, the fight will go to purse bids.

So either way, it sure looks like once-beaten New York “Miracle Man” Jacobs will be the next fighter to try and put a halt to the GGG-Express.

“They are negotiating. Already, Jacobs’ handlers have sent an offer – the numbers – to Tom Loeffler,” President Mendoza said. “That’s what I’ve heard. I’m waiting. There will be a time, if nothing happens, that we will call for purse bids. I’m looking forward to having one champion in the division.”

Jacobs, beaten only by the now retired (for good?) Dmitriy Pirog, has battled cancer and won and his inner strength and determination may serve him well against Golovkin. Jacobs has the tools to test GGG, maybe for a few rounds longer than Kell Brook did, but beat him? That looks a tall order – not just for Jacobs, but for any active middleweight. But Jacobs insists he fears no fighter and that he will not avoid Golovkin.

In New York, in December, this fight would attract quite a crowd. Let’s hope the fight can be made quickly. Fans are eager to see as much of the 36-0 punching machine know as Triple-G as they can. Roll on the next “Big drama show!”

Mendoza and his sanctioning body hopes to have just one champion in each weight class, and this is being worked on now. Mendoza told Sky Sports he hopes that “by this time next year, we will have one champion in each division.”

This seems a lofty goal but if it can be achieved, it will only be a good thing, obviously.
