Martin Murray v Jose Miguel Torres on September 5th in Leeds

Britain’s Martin Murray will face veteran 36 year old 2nd tier Colombian Jose Miguel Torres (31-6, 27ko) on September 5th in Leeds UK as part of what’s shaping up to be a pretty underwhelming card all in all.

In all fairness to new Matchroom signing Murray, and even promoter Eddie Hearn, the St.Helen’s man is stepping in to fill a gap on the bill left by Gavin McDonnell, who is helping twin Jamie prepare for his world title rematch with Tomoki Kameda in Texas, and it can’t have been easy to get a decent test in time, even though it is being billed that way.

For his part, Murray – a 3x world title challenger and arguably the most deserving fighter in Britain yet to win world honours, is fighting for the 3rd time in 4 months at his new weight of 168lbs, after moving up when he signed for Matchroom following February’s loss to Gennady Golovkin (tko 11).

Torres is the less successful older brother of former world champion and Miguel Cotto victim Ricardo Torres, and was knocked out in 2013 by (now IBF 160lb champion) David Lemieux – both likely to be selling points for this rather meaningless contest, that is supposedly soon to be scheduled as some type of lightly regarded title fight.

After this fight it will be important for Matchroom to try manouver the talented Murray into some kind of title contention, with the plan ostensibly being to match him with IBF 168lb champion James DeGale, or should he overcome Badou Jack in Vegas in September, countryman George Groves.
