Haye: If Vitali retires, I may follow him

By Michael Collins: David Haye wants a fight against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in the worst way imaginable and Haye’s not interested in staying busy while Vitali decides what he wants to do with his boxing career. Haye says might retire if he doesn’t get the Vitali fight. He’s telling everyone that’s willing to listen to speak how badly he wants the Vitali fight. It’s one of those things where he’s totally dialed into this fight and doesn’t want fight anyone else for some peculiar reason.

Haye said to the telegraph.co.uk “If Vitali Klitschko decides he is going to retire in the next few months, I may go down the same route, and I nay never fight again.”

What a waste. I got a question: Why doesn’t Haye forget about Vitali and fight someone like Tyson Fury, David Price, Chris Arreola or Kubrat Pulev. It might not make as much money as a Vitali fight, but I’m sure Haye will still make good cash that other fighters can only dream about. Why he need the Vitali fight so badly?

Is it because Haye wants the big payday before retiring or it because there’s more to gain in beating Vitali in terms of respect than say beating guys like Arreola, Pulev, Price and Fury? Haye would obviously not take as much criticism if he gets beaten by Vitali, because after all, the guy is considered one of the top two heavyweights in the division.

By constantly reminding the boxing public that he may retire if he doesn’t get the Vitali fight, Haye is putting himself in the position where he may lose credibility with fans if he chooses to stick around if he doesn’t get the fight. He’s already retired once and come back, so it’s hard to take him serious now that he’s talking about possibly retiring a second time.
