If everything works out well for WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) with his June 7th title defense against the ambitious Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s), then Sergio wants to face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) in a unification fight. But Sergio must get past Cotto, because a loss in that fight would make the Golovkin bout a meaningless one for him.

“I have a hard, complicated fight ahead [Miguel Cotto], but seeing how things are working, I know I’m gonna finish him. Once I KO Cotto on June 7, then I can concentrate on Golovkin,” Martinez said to Munod.

Sanchez feels that the excuses that Quillin and Sergio have been making for why they can’t fight Golovkin are pretty weak ones. He feels that they should be willing to step up and take the challenge against Golovkin rather than play it safe against other opponents.

“Peter Quillin stands behind the network [HBO vs. Showtime] right now,” Sanchez said to the Boxing Channel. “If he really wants to prove he’s the best, we’re willing to fight him.

If Sergio boxes Cotto, then his chances of success increase dramatically. But if Cotto is able to turn the fight into an inside war like he did in his last fight against fringe junior middleweight contender Delvin Rodriguez then that gives Cotto an excellent chance of beating the soon to be 39-year-old Sergio.

Sergio, a tough fighter from Argentina, thinks Maidana won’t be an easy out for Mayweather if he chooses to face him.

Mayweather hasn’t revealed whether he’ll face Maidana or an arguably weaker test in Amir Khan, but fans have pretty much spoken with their desire not to see Mayweather fight Khan. Maidana would be an upgrade over Khan despite the fact that Khan beat him three years ago.

cotto75Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) told the media on Monday in Puerto Rico that he wants to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) next. Cotto is targeting the 38-year-old Sergio because he wants to win his belt and capture his 4th division world title in the process.

It’s a goal that Cotto has that he wants to try and accomplish. It obviously doesn’t hurt that Cotto will get a huge payday in the fight. It’s got to be a signicant one, because he’s turning down $10 million+ offer from Golden Boy Promotions to fight former WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in March.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching Miguel Cotto vs. WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez next year in June during the Puerto Rican weekend at the Giants Stadium, according to Dan Rafael. Martinez, 39, has already tweeted that he’s up for the fight and there’s talk that it could take place at a catch-weight of 158.

Cotto hasn’t decided yet, and he’s going to think it over and look at all the options has available to him. Whether Martinez is the best fight he can get is unclear.

If Cotto can get a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez then that would be by far the better fight than to face the arguably much less popular Martinez.

A rematch with Mayweather is something that Cotto has already said he wants, and he should be looking to stay in the running for that fight instead of moving up to middleweight to fight a bigger fighter like Sergio.

While the Argentine ambassador was visiting with the thousands in attendance, the slick southpaw spoke about how he plans to fulfill his remaining two fight obligation with Home Box Office.

Co-promoter DiBella Entertainment stated publicly that Martinez will not return to the ring until spring of 2014, due to injuries suffered to his hand, shoulder, and knee. After his previous outing in Argentina, in front of almost 50,000 of his adoring fans, the 38 year old fighter stated that he wasn’t happy with the way his body responded throughout the grueling 12 round battle with previously undefeated Briton Martin Murray, and wanted to give his body adequate time to heal.

“I don’t want to fight until my body is 100%,” stated the talented boxer/puncher. “I haven’t trained since my last fight, and won’t fight until I’m all healed.”

Sergio Martinez says he’d toy with Golovkin for 12 rounds

martinez14WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) is currently out of action due to a broken hand and an injured left knee. The knee will reportedly require surgery this month to repair the problem. Martinez says he’s interested in facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s), but that the fight likely won’t happen until September 2014, according to ESPN.

Martinez won’t be fighting until April of next year, and he’ll likely take a tune-up bout at that time. If he looks good in that fight, then there could be a possible unification match-up against Golovkin for September.
