Top Rank’s Bob Arum, claims that Nonito Donaire (35-3, 23ko) is determined to finish his multi-weight, world title winning, accolade filled career with some big fights, and claims the ‘Filipino Flash’ is deadly serious about knuckling down to achieve that in what are essentially his twilight years, signing a new deal that could set him on a collision course with fellow TR stars, Vasyl Lomachenko and/or Nicholas Walters.

Donaire, who turns 33 in 12 days time, has just signed a ‘1 year-plus’ contract extension with his long-time promoter, and fights Mexico’s Cesar Juarez in a Dec. 12 clash on truTV (US) that is likely to be for the WBO 122 lb title recently stripped from inactive and avoided Cuban, Guillermo Rigondeaux.

This Saturday night on Matchroom Sports “High Stakes” card from Manchester, WBA (reg) champion Scott Quigg will enter the toughest fight of his professional career when he fights former IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez.

Assuming he comes through that fight, his trainer Joe Gallagher has spoken to Sky Sports to suggest that a clash with Belfast’s Carl Frampton is still a long way off after negotiations broke down recently, and that a fight with 4 weight world champion Nonito Donaire is the more realistic option for his fighter.

“If he gets past Martinez, it’ll be Nonito Donaire. It won’t be Carl Frampton. The problem with that is Barry McGuigan.” said Gallagher.

Nonito Donaire back in action on March 28

Nonito Donaire will be making his ring return on March 28th against the Brazilian William Prado, who holds a record of 22 wins (15 via KO) and 4 losses. The fight will take place in the Philippines and the airing network is still to be announced. One of Prado’s losses was a third round KO defeat to Scott Quigg in 2013. Prado is coming off a 1st round knock out win over a hardly known fighter named Marcelo Bispo (0 wind, 1 loss) in April of 2014.

In the “Mexican Style” co-feature, Nonito Donaire squared off against Jamaica’s Nicholas Walters before a packed house at the StubHub Center. Both men put their WBA featherweight titles on the line. If you’re asking yourself “how can both fighters have titles from the same sanctioning body in the same weight class?” – well that’s because the WBA is atrocious. None the less, this was a terrific bout between two of the best featherweights in the world, and they didn’t disappoint.

The StubHub Center, Carson City, CA kept adding seating, and the fans gobbled them up. Fans wanted to see Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire 33-2-0 (21 KO) squash Nicholas Walters 23-0-0 (21 KO) a rising star from Montego Bay, Jamaica, who learned his trade in Panama. They also eagerly wanted to witness Gennady GGG Golovkin get his 18th straight knockout. The build up for a Mexican Style battle was nothing more than a promotional tactic. Not many gave Rubio much of a chance. They were right.

First, what happened to the Flash. He put it best when he said, “He (Walters) beat the [expletive] out of me.” All you had to do was look at his face for convincing evidence. Both eyes were cut and swollen, and the rest of his face was also marked up. Walters was relatively unmarked, and was only in danger once in the second round when Donaire caught him with his vaunted left hook. It happened at the end of the round, and Walters wobbled back to his corner.

WBA Super World featherweight champion Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) says he’s not ready to give up his spot to the little known 28-year-old Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) in their fight later on tonight on HBO Championship Boxing from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The 31-year-old Donaire thinks he’s still got enough in the tank to get past the likes of Walters. However, Donaire has not looked good in his last several bouts, and there are some boxing fans who think that he played injured in his last fight against Simpiwe Vetyeka in order to win a world title in 5 rounds instead of going the full distance.

Records are going to be set tomorrow night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. In fact the promoters had to set up several sets of bleachers at the top of the bowl just to accommodate the expected over-capacity crowd. If the fan response at today’s weigh in was any indication, they may want to go ahead and set up a couple more.

Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) failed to make weight today at the weigh-in for his big fight on Saturday night against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs). Rubio tried to get down to the 160 pound limit, but he reached a sticking point at 161.8 pounds and he couldn’t get any lower than that.

Rubio stripped down in a vain attempt to make the weight, but it was clear he wasn’t going to be able to make the weight. By not making weight, Rubio will lose $100,000 of his $450,000 purse for the fight. This obviously was poor planning on Rubio’s part because the warning signs were there a month ago when Rubio weighed in at 174.5 pounds. In contrast, Golovkin weighed just 165 pounds at the time.
