Left-Hook Lounge: Mayweather’s legacy, Pacquiao’s future, and a Trinidad vs GGG fantasy!!!

06MayweatherandCaneloatDaisIMG_3770Jeremy H. (Orlando, FL): How do you compare the legacy of Floyd Mayweather to other athletes in history? In other words, what are your thoughts about him as a man, an athlete, and overall as a person, when he look at his legacy compared to great athletes of the past?

Vivek W. (ESB): This is a very broad question to tackle in just a few paragraphs. I think to best answer it, we have to look at things from day one. When we look at the entire history of Mayweather, we see a man who has had a very storied career that has seen him dominate from a very early stage. Even prior to the professional ranks, you have to consider that there was an Olympic Bronze that would have been a Gold had it not been for a poor decision. From day one, this has been a fighter who has proven himself at every level.

Pacman dares Floyd; assures he’s not over-the-hill

pac73“I was not mauled by Marquez, it was a lucky punch that knocked me out,” Manny Pacquiao explains in an ABS-CBN interview yesterday as he rejects Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s taunt and assures the fans he’s not over the hill yet.

Rightly so, Pacman was the one beating black and blue Juan Manuel Marquez into submission when the miracle blow suddenly hit the entire arena into shock during the quadrilogy. If not for the “lucky” punch, another round and Marquez would be out. The bloodied and bruised Marquez, gasping for breath, appeared to be the over the hill boxer in that bout had it not for the seer that hypnotized Pacquiao to fall twice.

Floyd: I’ll fight Pacquiao if he signs with Mayweather Promotions

pac3Floyd Mayweather Jr. is no longer setting a condition that Manny Pacquiao turn his career around before he’ll fight him. That was what Mayweather Jr. had previously asked for Pacquiao to do before he’d agree to fight, given that Pacquiao has lost his last two fights.

Mayweather Jr. now wants Pacquiao to sign with Mayweather Promotions before he’ll agree to fight him. Pacquiao currently is signed with Top Rank though 2014.

Mayweather Jr. said to Yahoo Sports “I’m just letting you know that he’s not getting a fight with me. The only way he’s getting a fight with me is if he signs with Mayweather Promotions. He’s got to give me fights with Mayweather Promotions. If he don’t give me no fights under Mayweather Promotions, then he’s not getting the fight. That’s how it’s working now.”

Manny Pacquiao: “I’m not a has been, I can still win fights!”

pac8It has been a while since Manny Pacquiao said anything of substance, or really anything at all. For some time now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been doing all the talking when it comes to Manny Pacquiao, recently stating:

“Pacquiao’s a has-been, his career is over; (but Juan) Manuel Marquez is a legend (and I commend him).”

Finally, Manny Pacquiao had something to say in response to Floyd’s rant, in defense of his boxing career and abilities in the ring:

Roach: “it’s over” for Pacquiao is he loses to Rios

roach45Trainer Freddie Roach says he’s going to tell Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) to retire if he loses to former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) in their fight on November 23rd at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Roach says he already has an agreement with Pacquiao that he’ll hang up his gloves when he tells him he’s no longer got it and needs to retire. Roach doesn’t say whether Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank knows about this deal or if he’d agree with it if Roach told his #1 money fighter he needs to retire.

Arum plans on having Zou Shiming fight on Pacquiao-Rios undercard in November

shiming33In a not surprising move, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum will be sticking unbeaten Chinese flyweight Zou Shiming (1-0) on the undercard of the November 23rd Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios pay per view card from Macao, China. Shiming, 32, has a fight scheduled 6-round bout this month against Mexican novice Jesus Ortega (3-1, 2 KO’s) that Shiming has to take care of first at the Venetian Casino & Resort in Macao, China.

Shiming’s fight on the Pacquiao vs. Rios card will be an 8 round bout, and following that Arum wants to move Shiming up to 10 round bouts. The idea here is to quickly move the former two-time Chinese Olympic Gold medalist quickly so that he can fight for a world title by next year provided he keeps winning and looking good in his bouts.

Floyd may struggle vs. Canelo; Pacquiao can handle Rios

Canelo answering media questions(Photo credit: Esther Lin) Despite the emergence of a Gennady Golovkin, what’s something special about the famous boxing “duo” which we can’t find in other boxers of this generation, so much so that the sport would seem to dim and weaken if they retire?

What is in Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao that keeps the sport “buzzing and oozing” notwithstanding the former’s disdained, manipulated “unbeaten” record and the latter’s recent heart-breaking “defeats”?

Mayweather says Pacquiao’s career is done

pac89Floyd Mayweather Jr. wasn’t bashful about giving his opinion about Manny Pacquiao in Mayweather’s press conference with WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in San Antonio, Texas this week. Mayweather told the fans that he saw Pacquiao as an over-the-hill fighter, and he then complimented Juan Manuel Marquez seemingly for a job well done in knocking Pacquiao out last December.

Mayweather said “Pacquiao’s a has-been; his career is over. [Juan] Manuel Marquez is a legend. I commend him.”

Pacman to Host Manny Pacquiao National Boxing Championships

pac67No, Manny Pacquiao National Boxing Championships is not a title of a video game or some upcoming book or movie about Manny Pacquiao, it’s an actuality event that Manny himself plans on promoting and even hosting himself in Manila in order to scout out top grade boxing talent.

According to a recent report, the event will feature eight boxing teams from all over the country, to pit eight boxers in eight weight categories, and fight from six to eight rounds in rotation matches among winners. The winner will be awarded with a Manny Pacquiao Trophy and a cash grant of P100,000 each.

This will most certainly be a very successful boxing event or show in the Philippines, but will it gain any international attention?
