Julius Indongo proves way too good for Ricky Burns; Crawford, Broner next?

Tall, clever and possessing attention-grabbing punch power, Julius Indongo proved last night that he is no one-hit wonder. The southpaw from Namibia burst onto the big stage in Russia in December, when he shocked defending IBF 140 pound champ Eduard Troyanovsky in a round, and last night he comprehensively outboxed Scottish hero and defending WBA champ Ricky Burns to become a two-belt holder (actually three belts, the IBO strap also his).

Now 22-1(11) the 5’11” Indongo could go on to become the main man at 140. With his awkward style (Burns, “devastated” by last night’s loss, just could not get to grips with Indongo, saying after the fight that he had no idea how awkward he would be), his long arms, his speed and his good boxing brain, the man known as “Blue Machine” just might give the likes of Terence Crawford and Adrien Broner all the trouble they can handle.

Ricky Burns (41-6-1, 14 KOs) lost his WBA light welterweight title tonight to IBF champion Julius Indongo (22-1, 15 KOs) in a 12 round unanimous decision defeat at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland. The fight was about as one-sided as you’ll ever see without it stopped. However, two of the scores by the judges seemed to be in fantasy land in giving Burns rounds that he clearly didn’t win. The scores were 120-108, 118-110 and 116-112. The score of those three that made sense was the 120-108 score.

Ricky Burns is gunning for the ultimate birthday present this weekend as he aims to add Julius Indongo’s IBF and IBO World titles to his own WBA Super-Lightweight title in their unification clash at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Saturday night (April 15) live on Sky Sports.

Burns turned 34 today and came face-to-face with the Namibian at their pre-fight press conference in Glasgow.

The Rickster welcomes the unbeaten Southpaw to the venue of his moment of history in May when he became Scotland’s first three-weight World champion with an eighth round stoppage win over Michele Di Rocco.
