It takes a lot to shock Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, as one would expect with a man who is in his eighties and has been around boxing for decades. But the Top Rank boss could not hide his shock over yesterday’s big announcement regarding Gennady Golovkin’s upcoming fight with Kell Brook. Speaking with RingTV.com, Arum called the fight, “F-ckin crazy!”

“Golovkin is fighting who?” Arum said to Ring. “I don’t believe that. That’s crazy. I mean, Golovkin is fighting a welterweight? You hear something crazy every day. I’m not surprised, I’m a little shocked. Is that even a fight? That is absolutely f-ckin crazy.”

In a huge announcement that went out live on Sky Sports news just minutes ago, it was announced how superstar Gennady Golovkin will face Kell Brook on September 10th at The O2 in London. Brook, the IBF welterweight champion, was to have faced WBO welterweight boss Jessie Vargas, but that fight stalled – now we know why. Chris Eubank Junior has not signed a deal to fight GGG, as was expected – with Eubank calling GGG out for some time and Golovkin even signing to take the fight – and now Brook gets the mega-fight himself.

Will a fight between Gennady Golovkin and Chris Eubank Junior – the man who has been calling him out for some time, even recently posting a hugely confident message on social media where he promised to “rip the belts” away from GGG – actually happen? Well, Golovkin appears to be losing patience. Taking to his own Twitter page this afternoon, the middleweight king made it clear: the ball is now firmly in Eubank’s court:

“Everything is agreed from our side. Now waiting for @ChrisEubankJr, who all of a sudden has lost his pen….” GGG wrote a couple of hours ago, more than a touch sarcastically.

If Chris Eubank Junior pulled off the seemingly impossible and defeated GGG, where would it rank all-time in great British wins?

The fight hasn’t been finalised yet, let alone officially announced, but all involved in getting the Gennady Golovkin-Chris Eubank Junior fight done are optimistic it will happen, possibly as soon as August, maybe in London. Golovkin has said he likes the fight and is willing to come to the UK, while Eubank Jr has been calling for the fight for some time. Now, if all the money issues, the TV rights issues and other things can be settled, with respective promoters Eddie Hearn and Tom Loeffler currently working hard to make it so, the fight could well happen.

Promoter Eddie Hearn says a fight between Gennady Golovkin and Chris Eubank Junior is desperately close to being made, with just “a few things to tie up but basically if everyone wants this fight then it’s all there to sign.” Speaking with Sky Sports, the Matchroom boss and promoter of British middleweight champ Eubank Jr said he sees the fight taking place in London in the autumn, probably in a big stadium.

According to Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who put out a Tweet that has been reported by a number of sources jumping on the story, he and GGG’s promoter Tom Loeffler reached an agreement for the fight to be held off until next September.
