Canelo – Golovkin: De La Hoya says verbal agreement reached for Sept 2017

It seems we will have to continue playing the waiting game as far as getting to see a middleweight showdown between stars Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez. According to Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who put out a Tweet that has been reported by a number of sources jumping on the story, he and GGG’s promoter Tom Loeffler reached an agreement for the fight to be held off until next September.

Why such a delay, fans are sure to ask. 15 months is a very long time in boxing and during this time anything could happen. Will Golovkin , currently aged 34, be past his best by September of next year, if just a little? Is this what Canelo and his team are hoping for. What if either man got beaten before next September? Would the fight still happen or would the lustre be lost, the fight going down as a “what if” moment in boxing history?

With such a delay on the big fight, fans will also be wondering who the two stars will fight in the meantime. Both are expected to be back in action soon, but who against?

Whoever the duo fight in their respective returns, the excitement will not come close to the anticipation a fight between the two going up against each other will bring – well over a year from now.
