Mention the words ‘welterweight’ and ‘Floyd Mayweather’ in the same sentence these days and it’s likely that Britain’s Amir Khan won’t be too far away from the conversation.
Irrespective of Floyd’s (sardonic) assertions that he will fight Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield – which you’d be a fool to believe – Khan still thinks that he is in the running for that fight in September and along with the likes of Kell Brook, Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman – is capable of landing the shot.

In terms of the fight, it was a case of too little, too late from Broner, who appeared to come alive right at the end of the clash – even scoring a late knockdown – and his much maligned attitude was summed up with an Instagram post directly after the fight that informed the world that he was off out – ostensibly to hit the clubs and get pi****.

Porter – who was too strong for Broner (despite having to weigh-in three-pounds below the welterweight limit as per Broner’s demands) appeared to have things largely his own way until the 12th and final round when Broner put him down with a lead left hook to the head – scored a unanimous decision and now wants to face Mayweather in September.
“Money,” who will be having his 49th and very possibly final fight at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 12th, has yet to officially announce his challenger. Amir Khan remains hopeful he will get his dream fight, while other big names such as Gennady Golovkin and Keith Thurman have been calling out Mayweather for some time. And now, in the opinion of some, Shawn Porter deserves to be considered for September 12th. But Mayweather, in speaking with his website of choice, FightHype, had a surprise in store when he was asked on camera who he will likely fight in September.
He enjoys a considerable base of support here in the UK – and top American welterweight Keith Thurman, who boxes Luis Collazo next month on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN – has spoken out regarding the “Mayweather September Sweepstakes” to suggest that if it is not he who gets the call to face his countryman and P4P star for “Money’s” 49th fight, then British IBF champion Kell Brook is more than deserving of the opportunity.
Speaking to BehindTheGloves.com Thurman also went as far as to suggest that Brook’s domestic rival Amir Khan – who has been publicly chasing a Floyd fight for over 2 years – has yet to show he truly belongs at 147 and thus is not as deserving a challenger.
This week saw his first sit down with the media since the Manny Pacquiao fight and Floyd Mayweather Jr has insisted that he is looking forward to his penciled in September 12th date – the final fight of his contract with broadcaster Showtime and 49th pro outing in all – however the future Hall of Famer confirmed via fighthubtv that finding and announcing an opponent is sure to take some time.
Not the news Britain’s Amir Khan wanted to hear, I’m sure!
Mayweather, who it’s widely expected will indeed box on to reach that record-breaking 50-0, mastered the art of self-promotion a long time ago.

Be it disrespecting his opponents in the ring, or exuding detestable arrogance outside of it, the thing that has irked me the most with the Ohioan motor-mouth throughout his precocious career is his seeming insistence on lifting large parts of Floyd Mayweather’s in-ring game and failing to adapt them properly to his own. The shoulder roll, would be the most prominent example.
It’s frustrating to watch, as Broner certainly exudes a natural talent of his own – a 3 weight world champ at just 25 years old.
With the ironically named “Fight Of The Century” now seemingly a distant memory, and Floyd Mayweather having just conducted his first media sit-down since then, attention has inevitably turned to just who wins the sweepstakes for his “final” fight in September – and obviously, when that subject is broached, one man is never far from proffering himself as the proverbial “lamb to the slaughter” – and that’s Britain’s Amir Khan.
Khan has spoken out to Sky Sports to suggest that the dream opportunity he has been chasing for the better part of 2 and a half years now, is finally about to present itself.
Ahead of his fight this weekend against Shawn Porter, as part of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, Ohio’s Adrien Broner has revealed that he has been receiving mentoring from “Big Bro” Floyd Mayweather in the gym – something he feels has been instrumental in preparing him for this Saturday’s clash.
In the eyes of many, Broner will always be “Floyd-Lite”, a poor man’s Mayweather, yet “The Problem” seems to believe that mentoring from the future Hall of Famer is key in finding himself as a fighter.
The latest going around on the net is the verbal sparring between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Khazakstan’s own GGG. GGG has said he’s confident of beating Mayweather should they meet September 12, 2015. Mayweather has responded saying that “GGG has never fought a top opponent in his whole career”!
GGG is lobbying to be Mayweather’s opponent for what will likely be the Las Vegan’s last fight of his career. Fan interest will be at an all-time high should this fight be made cause many fight fans buy a Mayweather PPV in hopes of seeing Floyd Mayweather LOSE and this fight would be extra special considering that Mayweather will be ‘equaling’ Rocky Marciano’s record by winning.
Floyd Mayweather is already trading shots with Gennady Golovkin … telling TMZ Sports the guy’s just running his mouth for a payday — and he’s way out of his league. Golovkin — who’s knocked out his last 20 opponents — told us Mayweather would be his “dream fight” and is 100% certain he’d win if they ever got in the ring together.
Now, Mayweather’s camp is issuing a response … saying, “Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd. It’s the biggest payday they could possibly have.”
“[Golovkin] has never fought a top opponent in his whole career … we’re surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest.”
Sounds like fightin’ words.
