Australian Boxing: Bob Rose Cup 2012

By Srithar Visuasam: On Friday night 29 June 2012, the 10th Bob Rose Cup held by Peter Maniatis Promotions took place at the Malvern Town Hall, Melbourne, Australia. In front of a full house, there was plenty of action in the seven fight card.

The main event saw Victorian rising star Michael Zerafa take on Ariel Omongos for both the Bob Rose Cup and Victoria State light middleweight title. Zerafa took to attack from the outset and Omongos made his priority to showboat and stir up the young Victorian. His tactic worked to a certain degree as it got Zerafa fired up, with Omongos not showing the same intensity in his boxing.

Late in the first round, Zerafa’s quick flurries saw him score a knockdown. The second round, Zerafa continue his aggressive intentions and scored a knockdown midway through the round and moments later a second knockdown, where the fight was waved off and Zerafa the winner, extending his unbeaten record to 7-0 with 4 KO’s and Omongos drop to 8-23, with 7 KO’s.

The fight of the night saw crowd favourite Joel Camilleri take on David Galvin in a light middleweight bout over six rounds. Camilleri, who debuted in the previous card at Malvern Town Hall in March with a first round knockout victory, left off from his previous fight and was keen to attack Galvin from the outset.

Galvin though was able to withstand Camilleri’s initial onslaught and rallied over the middle rounds and finished the stronger fighter. At the end of the bout, the scorecards read a 57-57 draw and 59-55 and 58-56 to the deserved winner David Galvin, who improves to 3-3-2 and now is riding a three fight winning streak, with Camilleri recording his first professional defeat.

In other bouts, Ashley McDermott kept his unbeaten record intact with a points decision win over Codey Cawthorn, a rather interesting second win from six fights, his other four bouts resulting in draws. Stephen Gillingham recorded a win in his comeback to the ring after close to two years out with injury with a points decision victory over Moses Ioelu and Terry Tzouramanis scored a 3rd round technical knockout over Joebert De Los Reyes, after De Los Reyes was unable to continue with a wrist injury. Pat Lynch scored a fourth and final round stoppage victory over Lee Kovacevic and Takashi Sugiura extended his unbeaten record and scored his fifth professional victory in a second round stoppage victory over Jayson Mac Gura.

Highlights from this event can be seen on the KO Boxing program on Channel 31 across Melbourne, Victoria and Channel Aurora on Foxtel.
