Chris Algieri talks about training with Robert Garcia in Oxnard

March 28, 2012 – After spending four weeks in a training camp with Robert Garcia, at his academy in Oxnard, Calif., Huntington, New York’s undefeated junior welterweight sensation Chris Algieri (13-0, 6 KOs) feels the experience was extremely beneficial and well worth the travel from the east coast.

Said Algieri about training in Oxnard with Garcia, “It was great. The atmosphere there is like nowhere I’ve been before. The gym is packed with talented guys who are in shape and everyone welcomed me with open arms. Although everyone is very serious about their training, at the same time they are very loose. As much as it is a serious place and everyone is getting their job done, it’s a fun place to be.”

“I spared Brandon Rios a couple of times. It was great, the kid is a beast. One of the days we were there he sparred 15 rounds and I did about five with him that day. He’s definitely strong and a real bull. He’s a really cool guy.”

Robert Garcia stated, “Chris is a good kid. He had a good camp and got good sparring. He’s one of those fighters that works hard and wants to get better. I see the potential in him and we want him back.”

Algieri is scheduled to fight Winston Mathis (7-4-1, 2 KOs) in the main event this Saturday at the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, New York, on a card titled “ROCKIN BOUTS 3” presented by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, his promoter.

Keith Trimble and Tim Lane will continue to work Algieri’s corner against Mathis as Robert Garcia had prior engagements to work with Kelly Pavlik in San Antonio, Texas on the same night.

When asked about returning to Oxnard for another training camp Chris stated, “Yes absolutely. Robert asked me when I was going to come back. I said I was going to stay home for a couple of weeks after my fight and try to head right back.”
