Lucas Browne – Ready To Challenge For Aussie and then Commonwealth Titles

By Young Runyon: Australian Heavyweight Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne has issued a warning to his next rival Colin Wilson and also revealed his aspiration to lift the Commonwealth Heavyweight title in the future. The undefeated boxer residing in Perth, Western Australia will challenge for the Australian Heavyweight title on February 17th at the Southport RSL.

He will face former three time champion Colin Wilson in his toughest battle as a boxer. Browne, who formally fought in Mixed Martial Arts, holds an impressive 10-0 record, with 9 wins by way of knockout. “I’ve trained the house down for this fight with Wilson. This will be my coming out party, believe me. I’m already in fantastic shape and I can’t wait to put on a show,” he said.

The fight will be contested for the vacant title after former champion Mick Kirby suffered a detached retina and thus relinquished the belt. “I feel sorry for Mick. He fought like a warrior and I hope everything turns out alright for him. I was looking forward to fighting him but now my focus is on Colin Wilson. I intend to spark him”.

Browne stands an imposing 6’4″ or 193cm and packs a right hand that has the potential to render his opponent unconscious. However he stated that he was more than prepared to travel the distance if required. “I’ve been preparing extremely well, putting my body through sheer hell and I believe it will show in my performance. If it goes the full ten rounds, fine. If I can end it before then, well that’s what the fans want to see. I’ve been sparring with Mark De Mori, Paul Samways and a couple of other guys. I can’t wait for February 17th and hopefully getting my hands on that prestigious belt”.

When questioned what direction he would aim for if he does win the Australian title, Browne left no room for interpretation. “I want the Commonwealth title, mate. My managers, Brendan Bourke and Matt Clark, tell me that no Aussie has held the title since 1892 and that is something I definitely intend to rectify. I read online that there’s a chance that Tyson Fury might be vacating to chase international aspirations. If I win the Australian title my management will be contacting whoever necessary to put my name forward for the Commonwealth title. But first things first, I need to win the Aussie crown”.

The Browne v Wilson bout will be televised around Australia live on Fox Sports.
