Will Mayweather Really Fight In Dubai? Can We Expect An Announcement Soon?

Floyd Mayweather Jr.By James Slater – It was all over the internet boxing sites a few days ago, how superstar Floyd Mayweather Junior had been hanging with the rich and famous, and how he mentioned to one high roller in particular how his next fight will be in Dubai, not in Las Vegas, and that he will be making an announcement soon. Seeing as how everything “Money” says these days makes the news, the promise of his having a next fight all set to be made official naturally got fight fans excited. But just who will Mayweather face next, and will he really fight in as exotic a local as Dubai?

Mayweather, a natural when it comes to knowing how and when to grab the headlines, will have been reading all about the Pacquiao-Margarito thing the same way we all have, and now that that fight is signed sealed and delivered (for good or for bad, depending on your opinion) it’s a good bet “Money” would love to upstage that news with some of his own. Should Mayweather announce in the next few days that he is going to fight a big and well known name in Dubai before the year is out, Floyd would surely steal the headlines once again; the way he did when he announced he was to fight Shane Mosley earlier this year..

However, writer Mike Marley writes in an article that Bob Arum, in talking to him, said such talk from Mayweather pretty much amounts to nothing but a joke. “If you knew who is making this offer to Mayweather, you would be laughing your ass off,” Arum said with regards to Floyd’s would be Dubai bout.

So, is Mayweather talking rubbish, or was he merely speaking off the cuff, without any real or genuine plans having been made when he spoke to that multi-millionaire a few days back?

The problem Floyd faces, if he does indeed plan to engage in a big fight in Dubai (or anywhere) this year, is that all the big names, at both 147 and 154-pounds, are busy right now, with big fights of their own either signed or close to being signed. So, unless Floyd is planning on facing either a light-welterweight or a middleweight (now, that would be something, seeing the 33-year-old great testing his abilities against a 160-pounder!) in his next fight, he has no obvious name to get it on with.

We all know the man we want to see Mayweather face, but he’s gonna be busy beating up a well known cheat in November; and that particular super-fight must wait until 2011 (if Floyd agrees to face Manny even then). And if Floyd does make what he hopes or thinks will be a huge announcement in the coming days, he may well find the fans being less than interested unless he does indeed announce how he will be fighting an opponent who will be a real threat to him.

It’s always tough to know what Floyd is thinking, and sometimes it’s just as hard to know what he means even when he talks or is being quoted, or misquoted. Are there really plans for the pound-for-pound star to fight in Dubai, or anywhere else this year; or is Mayweather merely laughing at us once again, knowing he is in fact content to remain idle until some time in 2011?
