Alex Leapai Calls Out Sexton And Chisora!

by Matt Clark: Australia’s premier Heavyweight, Alex “The Lionheart” Leapai (19-3-3 15 KO), is preparing for his latest assault on the division. Fresh off a thrilling fourth round stoppage over Travis “Freight Train” Walker on June 30, Leapai will step up to meet former world title challenger Owen “What the Heck” Beck. The fight takes place on August 12 at the Southport RSL, Gold Coast, Australia and will be televised around the country, live on Fox Sports. Like so many boxers, Leapai is an absolute pleasure to talk to. His quiet demenour is completely at odds with the ferocity he displays once inside the ring.

Q. Alex, firstly, thanks for taking a break from your schedule and chatting with boxing247.com..

A. Not a problem, my pleasure.

Q. Describe your style of fighting, for those readers who haven’t seen you box.

A. As you know, my style of fighting it to put it all on the table and try and get these guys out of there. I think this is a crowd pleasing style, but I realise I have to train extra hard to be successful at this syle.

Q. What do you know about your next opponent, Owen Beck?

A. We know that Owen is a skilled, experienced fighter. He has been all the way to the top, challenging for the Heavyweight championship a few years ago. I won’t be taking him lightly!

Q. How has your preparation been?

A. We have some good sparring coming this week and we will be ready on the night.

Q. There have been rumours floating around that current Commonwealth Heavyweight champion Sam Sexton may be a possible opponent. Is there any truth to this rumour?

A. There was some talk the other day about Sexton having me in his sights. I would love that fight, but with one condition. They would have to have Dereck Chisora gloved up at ringside and ready to go, as it’s a long way to travel to England for one round. I figure if Chisora is there as well, I might get three rounds in total.

Q. Anything that you’d like to add to your supporters and readers of boxing247.com?

A. I’d like all of my supporters to be ready for a wild ride that will be heaps of fun. I promise I will not die wondering and will give everything I’ve got. I think that with a few more fights under my belt, it will be enough to prepare me to give any of the champions a run for their money.

Q. Alex, thanks for taking the time to speak with us and best of luck with Owen Beck.

A. No problem, you’re welcome.
