News: Burgos vs Castillo; Leo Santa Cruz; Aaron Pryor Jr

Art Pelullo/Banner Promotions, Thompson Boxing Promotions, and Hector Garcia/HG Boxing will present a sensational fight card on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at the Tecate Boxing Tour Arena in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Featured fights will be televised on Televisa. In the main event scheduled for 12 rounds, Juan Carlos “Mini” Burgos, 24-0 with 17 knockouts, of Tijuana, B.C., Mexico, will battle Ricardo “Piolo” Castillo, 38-7-1 with 25 knockouts, of Mexicali, B.C., Mexico, for the WBC Caribbean (CABOFE) featherweight title..

Burgos, only 22 years old, has stayed active in the ring, stepped up in class of opposition and given strong efforts. Currently ranked No. 2 by the WBC, he is coming off a twelfth round TKO win against Juan Carlos Martinez in his last fight in January, 2010.

After the fight, Doug Fischer wrote on The Ring blog [excerpts]: “Featherweight up-and-comer Juan Carlos Burgos inched closer to a mandatory shot at one of the…title belts with a 12th-round stoppage of experienced spoiler Juan Carlos Martinez in the main event of an ESPN2-televised card…. The versatility, poise and precision he exhibited vs. Martinez suggests that he has the ability to win at least one belt and enjoy a successful boxing career.”

Castillo, now 30 years old, is a veteran contender who has challenged for world titles three times – twice at 122 pounds and once at 126. Currently ranked No. 15 by the IBF, he is coming off a third-round technical draw in a world title challenge against IBF featherweight champion Cristobal Cruz in his last fight in December, 2009. It was the rematch – Cruz won an eight round decision against Ricardo in January, 2003. Castillo, the younger brother of former two-time WBC lightweight world champion Jose Luis Castillo, is a former Mexican super bantamweight and featherweight champion.
